Still get into medschool through state school?

Ok, everyone on this board is a genius. As one of the exceptions I wanted to ask peoples opinions of making it into a medical school after going to a state school such as Umass Amherst.

It’ s certainly possible. Know a number of kids who have graduated from our state U and then gone onto medical school–including a number who have gone on to “name” schools like WashU and JHU.

It is impossible to get into any medical school if you go to a state school. Good luck at the Caribbean

(in case you couldn’t figure it out I was being sarcastic) Use a search function next time.

I’m guessing the majority of the Med School admissions are from State Universities. I’m not sure why anyone would consider otherwise after reading the multiple sticky threads at the top.

Make the grades, make the MCAT, do your EC’s, make the world a better place without getting into too much trouble. I’m guessing if all other factors are equal the name of your UG university makes a relativelly minimal difference in gaining admission.

i actually did read all the stickies but then none ever mention like mass state colleges so i was making sure. Thanks

I do not know any specifics of Umass Amherst. However, my D. had no problem getting accepted to few Med. Schools including top 20. She is graduating from state school. In fact she is impressed with her acceptances to the point that she has hard time deciding where she wants to go. And she has applied only to 7 Med. Schools which is way below average. She did not apply to very top schools that were recommended by her pre-med advisor (like Harvard, JHU,…), she just wanted to stay close to home. She was accepted on the first date that Med. Scnools could send acceptances - Oct. 16, right after midnight. Her friends pre-meds are not having problem getting acceptances either and some are invited to the same interivews as D. went. Some of them also have few acceptances to Med. Schools to choose from for next year.

“It is impossible to get into any medical school if you go to a state school. Good luck at the Caribbean” - very untrue statement. Please, do not listen to anybody, do your best at ANY place and you will be fine. No publications are needed either, just another rumor.

Miami. Colleges was kidding.

OP. Just do your best. Take advantage of the consortium classes. http://www.fivecolleges.edu/</a> Spread your wings. You can get anywhere from ZooMass ;). It’s really up to you.

BTW, I have no specific knowledge of UG pre-med at Umass. My D was accepted by another school in the consortium and I looked at the opps through that “lens”.

ASU -> Top medical school. Go where you will be happy.

It doesn’t matter where you get your undergrad from. Get the required GPA AND MCAT score and you’ll be fine.

Thanks curm.

If you took the time to read my entire post, you would see that a little bit later down I said I was joking around.
