I sure hope so, but from what I know about the conflict between the Math department and B-school, and from my conversation with the head of the Mathematics department, Morris Kalka, I am not optimistic.

Fallen, I know that Tulane is not notorious for this issue, but keep in mind that Tulane has also never been overcrowded as it is now.

At the risk of repeating myself, headingsouth, I would get your facts down on paper or whatever is appropriate and make an appointment to see Dean MacLaren. I year or so ago there was a problem with certain courses, Dean MacLaren heard the complaints and within a few days everything was fixed. He cannot respond to a problem if he is not aware of it, and as major as this is to you, it is entirely possible he does not know about it. It wouldn’t be the first time Department Heads and the like tried to keep an issue confined to their domain rather than have it percolate up to the Dean. That is just human nature.

The b-stats course is run by the Math Dept. I was told they plan for half the business majors to take it in the Fall and half in the Spring. I was told it is the same for English.

My son joined the wait list for Math 2240, he’ll be a sophomore in the fall, didn’t have any problems scheduling last year, but I had read the threads advising students to add themselves to the wait lists so the school would know they needed to add sections. There was another required class he could have taken, so he signed up for that one and joined the wait list for Math 2240. Ended up 30 something students were on the wait list, he registered on the 19th and sometime early last week, he received an email advising him they added another section and had put him in the new section and to check his schedule and make sure it would work.

Must be somewhat major and class dependent, and I can see the school figuring the half that didn’t get it in the fall, would take it in the spring. I do know several parents with rising sophomores in colleges in Texas and scheduling is an issue with several of their students too, especially UT Austin, and A&M, but also SMU and Baylor. Scheduling has got to be a logistical nightmare, especially trying to take into account preferred times and professors, its not surprising it takes a while to get it all sorted out.

Well that may be the case for Math 2240, but Business Stats remains closed and no new sections available - so it looks like the Math Department is taking care of their own. The problem with the theory that half take it in the Fall and the other half in the Spring is that Business Stats is a prerequisite for other B-school classes and having to delay a semester creates a problem for those seeking a joint degree program, double major, or 5 year masters program. It also means that these students have to fill their schedules with courses they don’t necessarily need or want, particularly if they have been diligent in trying to fulfill their core curriculum requirements in their freshman year.

One of my son’s waitlisted classes added 5 seats to each section of the class which was enough to get him a spot. At least he now has 15 hours - even if it’s not 15 hours of his first choice classes, they all serve a purpose in his curriculum. Now, if we could just get the cooperation of the math department…

I’m in honors as well! I emailed an advisor, here’s her reply:

“Thank you for your email. You do not need to worry about courses filling up. They only open up a certain amount of seats in each class per orientation session. Even if you cannot attend orientation in June, there are plenty of courses available to sign up in July. Please let me know if you have any questions.”

I don’t want the first few weeks to be a hassle, I mean I have to move in and get used to the city and everything. I don’t know what to do, I really want to register early.
