Still taking PE

If you take the beginner swimming classes, do you still have to take the swim test? =/

Aw, if you get in and can't swim take YMCA classes this summer or something.

I assume they have different tests depending on your level? lol

If you're in intercollegiate athletics, you don't have to take the swim test.

If you take the swimming PE classes (i think 2 semesters), you don't have to take the swim test.

If you're in SEAS, you don't have to take the swim test.

If you try and fail repeatedly and make a good-faith effort to complete the swim test, they'll usually sign off on you anyway.

it's not meant to be a major hurdle to graduation, it's more akin to paperwork.

Well, see, I don't want to go into the pool. DX I've almost drowned three times and I'm sort of...scared of water. >_> Not like a phobia, I just avoid swimming like the plague. Besides, swimming usually means sunlight, which I don't do. My skin so too light and I buuuuurn so very fast.

Haha my skin is lighter, I promise.
But I think the pool is indoors? Don't know.
If you were to tell someone that you are legitimately afraid of water, I'm sure they would find another way to get the PE requirement fulfilled.

Dude, people have asked me if I'm from Alaska because it looks like I've never seen sunlight. =/ And I won't mind the pool so much if it's indoors. At least there's no sun. I won't freak out if I have to swim, but I reeeally hate water. More than a cat.

I hate water but a swim test is a breeze... come on, nobody is going to make fun of you if you have to take a swim test or what not.

Well...I can't swim. xD

haha someone asked me if i had a pigment deficiency once. i almost cried.

The swimming test and PE should be the least of your concerns about Columbia; focus on the more important aspects of Columbia: The academics, clubs, research opportunities, and internship opportunities(not to forget the food!). The PE requirements are in place because (in my opinion) the university wants to make sure you have good physical habits(for life, not just for college) and are engaged in SOME form of physical activity.

As for the swim test, I do think the reason it's there is a bit archaic, but it is nonetheless important to know how to do. I mean, in life, sooner or later, you'll have to swim for some reason or another(vacation, meeting with friends, who knows?). I'd be somewhat embarrassed to not be able to swim when going on a vacation or what not.

Well, there's a thread about everything but the PE credits. xD We've got everything else covered and this topic is fun.

Edit: You think having people think you have no pigmints is sad? People can't tell my ethnicity period. =/ They look at me and get reeeally confused.

I was always worried about freshmen 15.
I haven't swum since 3rd grade
I guess i'll do it just for Columbia.

(If I get in)
:)

If we both get in, I'll teach you how to swim haha
but not in the sunlight! i might get skin cancer and die

If I get in, you can teach me to swim too. We can buy truckloads of sunblock. xD And then pour it all over ourselves until we become whiter than Michael Jackson.

I don't know if that's even possible lol

I love PE!

In my PE class, we sat in a portable and watched movies for a semester. I used it as my study hall or nap time, depending on how much work I had. Man, high school PE is such a joke.

hahaha omg we used to watch movies in ours too!!! and i def napped/studied in it as well!

And people wonder why kids are getting fatter. XD
