Stop giving UCSB so much crap. Also will answer questions :D

Hi there. I am currently a freshman for computer engineering at ucsb, and I just want to get this out.

I feel that, the reputation that SB has makes people avert from the school way too much.
after nearly two quarters here, I gotta say, UCSB is a great school. Yes, there are alot of parties, yes there are alot of partiers, but I definitely feel like the college experience is amazing.

Instead of instantly judging the school "oh the other schools are better, ucsb is just a party school.", why don't you try to explain why the rankings are so consistently high even with the amount of people throwing their grades for parties? That's because it's greatly exaggerated. People here know how to enjoy themselves as well as be serious for school.

Instead of instantly judging the school, understand that the school is a great college and that you will get out of it what you put in.

That aside.
If anyone has any questions, about dorming(which to pick?), classes, major, I'm willing to answer a couple :]

What were your stats?

If you don’t mind me asking, how much are you paying per year? Cost is a big concern for me, and it looks like going OOS to ASU’s Barrett might be cheaper for me based on UCSB’s estimated cost of attendance.

hey, i applied as a computer engineer as well, was wondering if i coudl do software engineering there?

Distort3d- You mentioned willingness to discuss housing. I ASSUME I will be a freshman next year. (Got one of those invitations to a UCSB reception) Definitely want the dorm experience so I can meet as many people as possible but a little concerned if rumors are true that you can’t sleep/get work done cuz there is so much partying going on distracting you? Is there some nice, “inbetween” dorm for the social person who also is serious about studying? Suggestions? And do I need to apply for housing early? Is it in short supply?
Thanks!

HI, I really want to go to UCSB but my stats aren’t quite there
I have a 3.6 UC gpa and low sat 1670.
I experienced a close loss my soph year and wrote about it in my personal statements and therefore received a optional supplement for borderline applicants from UCI. I don’t SB does that though…
I think my personal statements were good enough and I also heard UCSB take a more close look at the applicant as a whole compared to UCI who just looks at stats etc. Is this true?
Also, what are my chances of getting in? Thanks!

Hey!
So I applied to UCSB and I’m still waiting to hear back. Most of my questions have to do with Santa Barbara and the area around it.
I know there are a lot of parties that go on at UCSB, but what is there to do off campus? Does downtown Santa Barbara have anything cool to do? How far away is the nearest mall? One concern I have about UCSB is that SB seems to be like kind of a secluded beach area, far away from any big cities or urban communities. Is that the case? Because as much as I love the beach I also love urban environments. Because it’s such a beach-y area I’m also wondering how difficult it is to get an internship for something other than marine biology? I want to be a music journalist - are there any music venues in or near UCSB? What is the music scene like at UCSB?

Okay you totally don’t have to answer all those questions but I wanted the throw my thoughts out there. Thanks :)

lol distorted. . .you’re swamped with questions. xD

folks, UCSB get kicked out from the party school top 10 list — from the hairless lemon !!!

EFFFF SWAMPED WITH QUESTIONS LOL

@ MEZA

My stats??
Quite bad. I got rejected from SD. didn’t apply to la/cal, got into uci/davis

3.4 overall gpa. 3.5 academic unweighted. 3.84 weighted academic UC gpa. 2140. only took it once though :P

@Wacko

The raw cost without factoring in financial aid is 7.5-8k per quarter. It’ll probably drop once I move out of the dorms. I’m also signed up for health insurance and that’s another $300ish per quarter. And I’m in a double.

@myst
computer engineering is basically software and hardware. Compsci is programming/software emphasis and the other majors like EE is mostly hardware.

@artsy
All the dorms are relatively chill. santa catalina is 1 mile off campus and kinda crazier if that affects anything, but that’s where i live. My favorite dorms are santa cruz, san nicolas and anacapa. Though you should visit and check all of them out.

If you put a LLC, like “substance free floor” or “scholars” you will probably get that floor. so be sure to be careful with your picks. Though, if you’re asian, I would avoid trying to get the asian floor. I’m asian and I avoid it… it’s kinda iffy :P

housing is pretty good, as long as you get it in before the deadline you should be good.

@iloveppl

one post is enough :P

Your sat score is pretty iffy, but the rest of your stats look solid. as long as you didn’t apply for science/engineering i’d put you at 60-75% maybe?

@anna
My suitemate is a opera singer, but there’s fun stuff to do. Surfing, hiking, shopping, downtown is pretty awesome, I went to a maroon5 concert in october in sb haha. Engineering internships are somewhat obtainable, but about music, I’m actually the wrong person to ask :stuck_out_tongue:
I didn’t do any research on that and I don’t know too much about it. But my suitemate has quite a lot of concerts, so i guess it cant be too bad.

@ hairy

GOT THROUGH THEM YEEEE

@theleakers
it’s actually still pretty good for parties :P

I have a low GPA 3.55 UW but a high SAT 2180 and two 800s on my subject tests will I get in?
Also what is the best dorm for partiers?
What is the best dorm for those who like a mix of academics and social life?

Edit: I applied for CpE too. I have a lot of previous programming experience.
How is the curve at UCSB? Is it like being a big fish in a small pond?

distorted. . .you live in FT too? which tower?

leakers: the hairless lemon will get hairy again. muhahahahaha

hello! thanks for taking the time to answer questions =)
do you have any idea how good the econ program is at sb? and also i hear that the campus population isn’t really known for its diversity, but people are still really friendly and outgoing! is that true? im not white, and im from the bay area which is HELLA (hehe) diverse, would it be kind of like a reverse culture shock?
thanks again!

The econ program is from what I heard very good, I have a few friends who graduated from SB with a degree in business econ, one of them I know works for UCLA. I also know that we have a nobel laureate for econ so that’s always a plus.

For some reason I don’t see why people wouldn’t think of SB as diverse, in fact I find it as one of the most diverse campuses. I’m pretty sure the admissions office has been admitting more people from different ethnicities because I’ve met many types of people here, in fact I think I have more friends that aren’t white lol. There shouldn’t be much of a change from the bay and SB, most of my friends from the bay all seem to fit right in, they don’t have any problems.

^hey look its fendi.

whaddup fendi. lol

So Fendi-here’s q #1 for you. Have any opinions about CCS? I’ve just been accepted (Art) and don’t know if it’s for me. Went to SJ reception yesterday to learn more. The student panel seemed insanely brainy and pretty esoteric as well. Do you know any “normal” students who are happy and successful there? I’m talented and a hard worker but not “otherworldly” :slight_smile:
If you don’t know anyone in CCS, do you know any art/design students in L&S and are they happy with their classes?

What’s up Kenny, ahaha

And I wish I could answer that question but sadly I cannot, I don’t know anyone in CCS Art :X

@mete it should be out so… :P

@lemon. South. :]

@ohfo yeah as he said the econ program is good.
ucsb is VERY diverse. I’m from the fcking bay and I’m glad there’s wayyy less ****ing asians in ucsb. (I’m asian too, so don’t call my ass out :P)

@artsy.

My good friend is a L&S art major. He went to one of the best schools in california, mission san jose, but he is art major because it makes him happy, even though his grades and intellect is even above mine… and I’m an engineer. Keep in mind there are only 300ish students in CCS and you get SO MANY DAMN perks for being in it :P

you can schedule personal talks with counselors for being in ccs which is ALOT harder to do if you’re in l&s.

don’t know anyone in ccs art. You don’t run into ccs ppl too much, they’re rare.

What’s the Asian floor in San Nic like?
