i tihnk that the people who find themselves posting threads about thier chances are trying to find themselves. Now there is nothing wrong with that. But some of these scores are unrealistic. Someone earlier in this thread asked if anyone thought that people were fudging their scores a little. I agree they definetely are. C'mon you are going to sit here and tell me that someone can have a 4.25 G.P.A., president of like 5 clubs, have 500+ community service hours, have played piano or any instruemtn for 10+ years and still have time to post on this board. C'mon some people come close to that, but nobody has that. I am the president of a club and treasurer of another. I know how hard it gets to deal with some ppl. Now 5 of those clubs, thats a big lie.

Lmao. I don't recall "trashing" anyone's self-esteem. I have never told a CC'er that they had no chance in hell. In fact, I am often encouraging them to apply, even with sub-par scores. I just happen to agree with etselec.

I used to think the endless "chance" threads were annoying, but, after being on CC for a while now (if you read my profile, I’ve noted that I’ve read the forums much longer than my join date), I cannot blame a lot of the posters. Yes the "HYP CHANCES??" threads are trite, and I usually ignore those. I have, however, helped various people and even convinced someone to apply to a few more schools because I believe in their ability. Don't try to tell me what kind of person I am because you didn't like my response to your thread-- especially not if you want to provoke a more thoughtful reply.

theworld: why would people lie? i'm no president or anything but i am a valedictorian with high SATs who finds time to post here

theworld~

In my opinion (which might be completely false), it actually could be true. Imagine a school, not that I'd say anyone's school might go that far, with varsity atheletic programs that do nothing, clubs including only the officers, and a community that will give away "free hours." Now of course this place will not exist, but I definitely know people who get "double hours" for doing volunteer, and know several clubs in our school that are only "paper clubs." When people feel like it, they could definitely do that to boost their application.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to accuse anyone on this board of these, but I'm just trying to point out--they are do-able.

I'll give an example:
If some with a 3.2 GPA, is ranked 40/100, has SATs of say (600,500,570) and gives a list of colleges with low admissions rates and lists no safety schools, we here on the board can at least advise them and warn them. It's the least we can do. I would also tell them they would have a very, very difficult time getting in and should instead spend money of colleges where they would have a better chance of getting into.

Exactly me, although my GPA is a point higher, and my SATs were a few points higher. I wouldnt dare post a chances on here. Not that I feel ashamed, but I know enough what my chances are and where i'm applying.

People definately prevaricate on these boards - but doing so reduces their effectiveness. I've sat through 3 admissions cycles, am fairly familiar with admissions at a few schools - and I figure that I just might know enough to say something like 'good list' or 'perhaps adding a few matches and safeties might be wise.' I think that one of the things that makes it difficult is that we don't see the whole application - essays, rec's, financial. The main College Confidential site offers a Stat's Eval for $89 - once you have a list of colleges, most of your scores and a writing sample, I think this is a very reasonable investment - it provides a reality check that you haven't gone off the deep end entirely.

people who post threads in chances full well know that they are not being evaluated by experts (or at least they should.) if they want to ask random people on the internet if they can get into any schools let them do it! and if those random people want to suggest ivy league schools or give a totally unsupported opinions on said chances - let them do it! that is the whole point of this particular forum. people know what kind of opinions are in here. some are very thoughtful and fairly informed, others, well, aren't. but at least people know that. this is what cc is about - a dialogue about college. if you don't like the chances forum there are quite a few others to peruse on cc.

they just want opinions from peers. sheesh its not such a bad thing

Wow... lots of responses to this thread.

ohio_mom, it is people like you who make it hard for me to generalize this section as bad. I've posted on this section before, and after I weed out the majority, there are a few people who have good insights and information without being overally critical. Don't get me wrong, the What are My Chances? is one of the most vital parts of this website, I have just been disheartened at the responses that some people are giving. I think it is really a lack of information that is responsible for some of this, and the responses seem to hurt the original poster more than help them.

amina- i never said you told a person they had no chance. What I said was that you angrily typed that I should leave what are my chances? if I don't like it. I'm just trying to improve it. It seems like the people who say the things you said are the same people who bash people with lower stats than yourself.

As for people who make up their stats on this forum.... I don't know, kind of loses its effectiveness. Maybe that is part of the reason why I don't like What are my chances? I like putting up my real scores so I can know exactly where I stand. I would consider myself a competitive candidate to most colleges (unfortunately that meant i have been a slave to college admissions for the last 3 years). However, it seems like I am completely unqualified when put up against all these other applicants.

The thing is, there are only 24 hours in one day. It doesn't seem possible for the majority of cc's to be more qualified on paper. (I know cc's are incredibly smart, but come on)

Maybe I would be happy if this section had a disclaimer at the top:

Take the information on this board with a grain of salt. You could be more qualified than the person offering their advice.

you're right---- the two words "wholistic approach" have indeed never appeared on this board before.....

the words "holistic approach," however, oddly have...
