Everyone---

I really enjoy every other part of college confidential. Everywhere else in the website, the info is informative, the people are nice, but it seems like when cc's go to What are my chances? they all of a sudden become mean (though they say "you asked for my opnion"). To get into a good college, everyone on this board says you have to have a 4.0 and 2400 SAT. Not true.

Wholistic Approach are 2 words never before seen on "what are my chances"

you can reply back by blasting me ... telling me to leave "what are my chances" if i don't like it....you can call me a name.... or you can listen to what i've said.

I think we shouldn't let people ask for their chances if they have above 2000 on the SAT. Your thoughts?

??

I don't think anybody should continue to ask for their chances.

"To get into a good college, everyone on this board says you have to have a 4.0 and 2400 SAT. Not true."

Your first sentence is "not true" while your second is "true." Sure, there are some people who are either misinformed, sarcastic or simply mean when they say you need a 4.0 and perfect SATs to get into a good school. But there are also many helpful people on this board.

Yes, the "What are my Chances?" board is not perfect. First off, most of us are not, and have not been admissions officials at any college or university. We don't know for certain what they are looking for. What we can do, is look at the general stats of people who get in to good colleges. From that, there is average scores, GPAs, types of course schedules etc. While I can't give someone a actual probability of whether they would get in or not, at the very least we can offer some good advice to some ill-informed college applicants.

I'll give an example:
If some with a 3.2 GPA, is ranked 40/100, has SATs of say (600,500,570) and gives a list of colleges with low admissions rates and lists no safety schools, we here on the board can at least advise them and warn them. It's the least we can do. I would also tell them they would have a very, very difficult time getting in and should instead spend money of colleges where they would have a better chance of getting into.

While some mean spirited people or impatient people may just say- "no chance, get off this board," I think the proper purpose of this board is for those of us who have gone through the process to help these people identify better options.

So no, while this board is extremely flawed and is prone to abuse by both posters and responders, I think it still serves a purpose.

yea i think some people post high stats just for the heck of it...like "look at what i got"

nobody is forcing people to post on the "what are my chances" board. I agree that there are many helpful people on this board. However, I think that people should def consult a college consultant or a college councelor (depending on how good your school's are) regarding college before deciding not to apply to a dream school.

I dunno if that made any sense but its late and i NEED to go to bed sorry.

Keep dreaming, Oracle...:)

horrible idea IMO, I got 2100 but my gpa is not exactly on par. I still have a lot of questions about my chances. I wish above 2000 would get me into any college but It doesn't, and until it does, I'll just keep having questions. Besides, If there was a rule like that, I would just lie and say my score is 1990.

lol...i guess i'm going to have to. i guess what im trying to say is people put up nearly flawless stats, ask about ivys, and 10 people say "don't waste the application fee" (i've had that experience) maybe the 3.0 1700 SAT people cc's go nicer on, but it seems that everybody wants to take down anybody with higher stats

just my thoughts, obviously not always right

oracle, youre onto something for sure.... this board definately isn't perfect... a lot of times its just used for people to post their stats when they feel discouraged about the admissions process in order to get a positive answer (i have done this for sure)... i think it does have some value though... even if it is kinda rough and tumble...

You have to go into this board with a grain of salt. People's expectations are way too worked up to an unachievable, robotic standard of perfection.

But yet, that doesn't disqualify this board. This section of CC provides a realist view. People think like this in real life. Ya get to find out what the hell are your flaws when compared to perfection, and it's constructive criticism. Yeah, it's biased. But a college admissions officer will be too; he doesn't have to give you the pleasure of being as objective as possible.

I needed help identifying what my problems were as an applicant. When you get a consistency such as I did(for me, about my SAT scores) you know what to work on. That's extremely valuable stuff.

inskel- yes.. the sat scores are the same with me. but instead of saying "get up the sat scores and you will be as competitive as anyone" they say "hell will freeze over before you get into this school"

just the mentality of this board.

also, does anybody else think people fudge on their scores somewhat??

i think the chances board is too soft if anything. just today some guy with like a 3.6 unewighted gpa wants his chances to some okay colleges and some idiot recommends ivy league schools no matter what the guy's socres are.

That's because some people here are so obsessed with Ivy schools that they don't know anything about other schools.

Can you please direct me to a post where you find this mentality?

If you don't like the Chances forum, don't visit it. Simple as that.

Well, I think this board is definitely useful, though seriously flawed. People are right, lots of posters don't know what they're talking about and simply type "You're not getting in" without giving explanations.

So my idea is that people identify their credentials before giving their opinions. i.e. Give a reason why he or she feels qualified to talk.

etselec and amina....

as indicated in the first post on this thread, I was hoping to provoke responses more thoughtful than 'leave if you don't like it'. And I'm saying that this part of the website hurts more people than just myself. (the unsuspecting applicant who gets their self-esteem
trashed by people like you two)

gj12789 - I agree, this board is very useful. Unfortunately, I'll continue to post and read on this section, but i hope that the cc's on this section change their course. As far as creditionals go, somebody who got into an ivy may have no idea why they got in while somebody else got rejected.

My idea would be that all posters use words like reach, target, and safety instead of saying "not a chance"

don't most posters use reach/match/safety?
