Straight Up Honesty

Alright here's the deal,

I live in Palo Alto California ( right outside San Francisco) and have wanted to go to UMich ever since i started looking at colleges a couple years ago. I was accepted into LSA in December, and was pretty set on going, but now I am seriously reconsidering. I visited the campus in Feburary and I really liked it, but to be honest, i didn't get that "i really belong here" feeling, but definitly came away with a positive review.

That being said, I'm deciding between UCSD and Michigan, and I honestly don't know which one to pick. I am serious about academics and getting a good education, but I also want to have a really fun undergraduate experience.

As far as money goes, my parents said they will pay for Michigan OOS tuition if that is the place I truly want to go, so as far as that is concerned, it won't be a problem.

Any advice? At all? Please!!?

Go to Michigan

Go to Michigan…I’ll be honest. Michigan in February sucks. But as to football games in the fall, nice days in the spring, being fortunate enough to stay for a summer, Ann Arbor is a great place to be. You have a tremendous opportunity to attend Michigan. Do it.

Go to Michigan. You picked the absolute worst month to evaluate a college anywhere in the midwest. The undergraduate experience in Ann Arbor is not easily duplicated at the vast majority of universities. If you absolutely hated the cold, UCSD is a great school and imo has the best weather in the continental U.S. The lousy weather does help you concentrate on studying instead of going to the beach. :-)

thanks for the feedback guys
i don’t know, i’m torn between the two

San Diego is such an amazing town and its relatively close to home, only about an hour flight.

Granted Michigan’s schedule is way better, out of school late April = amazing

I have been to both schools, and I can see why you are torn. Thats a tough decision. Is the mediterranean weather/beach important to you?

i mean, it matters, but its not a huge deal. I could definitely deal with the winter, and it would not ruin my college experience. Granted, the distance from home seems somewhat discomforting/a nuisance, so as of now i’m still torn

Also take into note how great summer weather could distract you from school. I know that sounds dumb, but I know if its nice out and my friends asked me to do something outside I would even though I might have to study for something. Then again lifes not all about working, but for the next four years it should be your focus. You can have tons of fun at UMICH and still be focused. Work hard, play harder.

Go to USC… Seriously though, go to Michigan. It will probably challenge you a bit more academically, but you’ll definitely have a great time. Not to mention Michigan has massive alumni and you’ll probably have better employment opportunities.

Let me ask you. do you have any issues paying $50,000 OOS fees vs whatever you pay as in-state California resident?

The OP indicated that his/her parents would pay for Michigan. I guess there is no issue.

fortunately, my parents are in a financial position where I am able to afford OOS tuition, however, i don’t konw if the extra 25k a year is worth the quality of education. Not going to lie, I’d probably feel a bit bad making my parents spend ~ 45k a year.

^^^^^Well then that is a different issue. If you are going to feel guilty, Michigan is not worth spending an extra 100k to attend over UCSD. If you are absolutely in love with Ann Arbor and can afford it, then that is another story. Already there was an indication you are not quite sure about the vibe at U-M. You are very fortunate to live in California and have lots of choices to attend excellent public universities. Just go to San Diego and never look back. It is a very fine school.
