Streaking Team!!

Who's joining? It is AWESOME!

www.HamiltonStreaks.com

Um - not me? I personally find nothing wrong with being naked, or find anything shameful about the human body. But frankly this just seems retarded. Running around trying to shock people and getting drunk and arrested just isn't my cup of tea. Have fun with your naked endeavors - I promise I won't say "I told you so" when you're sitting in the back of a police car wearing only your trainers.

They actually don't get arrested...however they have been cited for disorderly conduct.

It IS stupid...but that's the point. :-)

There's a point? :) Ah for the joys of stupidity - a purpose as an end in itself. It seems like streaking has gone a little out of styles since the 60s. All those repressed hormones - somethings got to give. College is going to be interesting.

Ummm, they were arrested at Colgate last year.
(Don't get me wrong, the streaking team is one of the things I like best about Hamilton. Great article in the NY Times last year about the streaking team).

haha ok, so I'm wrong there.

I still think its cool. :-)

The members of the streaking team would agree with you. They might use the word chilly though. :)

Are you a nudist/naturist Adeline?

Not really...maybe a naturalist...but not a nudist (the thought of that creeps me out).

I just think its great to be comfy in your own skin and make some waves while doing it.

:-)

Lol - the term naturism (not naturalism) and nudism are practically interchangeable. I fail to see how being a nudist would "creep you out" if you would consider yourself more of a naturist. I would Google it or try a wikipedia search if you're not certain. I'm not sure whether you're trying to be lighthearted or not, but I'm going to ask you - do you consider "making waves" and facing possible arrest to be in your rational, selfish interest? That's why they have to drink before pulling stunts like these - being comfortable with your body has nothing to do with being an exhibitionist, which is what these yoyos are. Did you watch their little promo? Did they sound very intelligent to you? Nudism/Naturism is about enjoying yourself without clothes, sometimes in a social context. These guys have some other agenda (or maybe they don't - whim worshipping is in style these days). What do you think (preferably in more than one sentence :p)?

Yes, I understand the similarity between the two words....but to me they have different connotations.

I have watched the promos, and I think the members have a good sense of humor. The segment on fox news was particularly enjoyable. I think anyone capable of attending Hamilton must be extrememely intelligent, and the streakers are just looking to have fun.

And you have to be comfortable with your body in order to be an exhibitionist. lol.

"Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging respect for oneself, respect for others and for the environment."

When I think of nudism I think of fat people in communes ( I realize I have a prejudice)

When I think of naturism I think of running in a sunny field. Those are my crazy personal associations.

When it comes down to it...I know that I will NOT join the team. I just find it entertaining and somehow alluring because it is deviant.

But when it comes down to it, I'll join the school paper, the objectivist club, and be in my room studying. I don't drink or anything like that. I just have a devilish streak that I don't act on.

Lol indeed - the Fox segment was particularly amusing.

Q: "So why in the world are you streaking?"

A: "Well there was this guy Alexander Hamilton and he was struck down in the prime of his life. We streak for him. It's all about the glory and winning..."

Q: "Okayy I don't understand that at all. Why do you streak?"

A: "I streak for the little people. I streak to win."

[/quote]

I'm maintaining the booze and alcohol theory. My Calc teacher sometimes makes a note next to a problem where you've made a fairly egregious lapse in rational and logical reasoning. He writes "SENSE?!" My response to the answers that the uh, erm, "Hamilton Representatives" gave would be "SENSE?!" For some things in life there are no words...

I actually have very similar interests to you - right now I'm the editor in chief of my school newspaper, but I think the Objectivist Club at Hamilton might be defunct. If I get accepted maybe we could start it up again - for some reason I have a feeling that the Objectivist population is fairly small. Not many teens are willing to wade through The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged. They just take a look at the amount of pages and put it down. :)

Indeed...I have a little circle of Rand followers (my friends) at my small school, which is fun.

I LOVE Atlas Shrugged, perhaps even more than The Fountainhead. I can't decide. I think you are right about the defunct club...it was active a year or two ago, and I totally agree that we should bring it back to life.

I'm hoping to find some bibliophiles at Hamilton. (Not Nudists) hehe.

Well Atlas is more explicit and complete in its philosophy. TFH is still my favorite though - for some reason I identify more with Roark than Dagny (other than the fact that I'm a male). Roark just has this attitude - "I've come here to say that I don't recognize anyone's right to one minute of my life."

Have you read any of her non-fiction? I've read The Virtue of Selfishness, Capitalism the Unknown Ideal, The Romantic Manifesto, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, Philosophy Who Needs It - and all of her fiction. I guess you could say I'm a fan :)

I highly suggest the ObjectivismOnline.net forum for some great discussions, if you'd like. I read voraciously - so I'm hoping to find others to talk to as well. Just out of curiosity - what part of the US are you from?

I actually haven't read her non-fiction. I always want to, but I just haven't. I plan to though. I think its great that you're such a fan...I really love Rand's writing too...but I haven't read as much. "For the New Intellectual" is a great sampling of Rand's stuff...good for carrying around in a pocket. I joined the Objectivist Institute, which sends interesting editorials, etc.

I agree with you that Roark is incredible. I'm in love with him.

But I hate Dominique. As a female, I admire Dagny fiercely. I actually wanted to change my name to Dagny...but I won't. I always want to change my name.

I'm about 4 hours from Hamilton. You? If you get in, is it your first choice?

I'm in New Jersey - which is about 4 hours away too. Is your name Adeline? I wouldn't change it - I think it's quite beautiful and unique. When you said the Objectivist Institute - did you mean the ARI (Ayn Rand Institute)?

Hamilton is among my top choices. If I get into UChicago or Brown it might make me reconsider, but otherwise I'd be more than happy to go to Hamilton. The other two are long shots anyhow. The first non-fiction book I'd recommend to pick up would be The Virtue of Selfishness.

Dominique is an interesting character - you have to understand that she held a mistaken philosophy - the malevolent universe premise. Rand once said that Dominique was herself in a bad mood :).

btw - I went through the stage where I wanted to act exactly like Roark or Galt - its so easy to get caught up in Rand's powerful writing. Remember to always stay true to yourself though - and to keep in mind that Objectivism is a philosophy to enable you in the pursuit of your own happiness. Besides - I always thought Dagny was an ugly name :p

Yes- Dominique is "mistaken", and yet I feel myself drifting towards her side sometimes. (its easy to get down when in High School).

But ultimately, Rand does present a powerful and compelling philosophy which I admire and it keeps me strong.

Adeline is a nickname of sorts...but I have adopted it more and more. I plan on using it at college. I love the name...its inspiration is derived from the Elliott Smith song "Sweet Adeline". Lux is from The Virgin Suicides...and it means light in latin.
