I was considering applying to Carnegie Mellon because I was under the impression that its strength was equal quality and reputation for the humanities and the sciences. Upon further research, however, it seems that it is almost purely a tech school, and that it’s only non tech strengths are in the fine arts. Is this true?
Not completely true, but its tech programs are in the very highest tier, while most of their other programs are not.
These schools are great in tech while all their other programs, for the most part, are also in the highest tiers:
-Stanford
-UC Berkeley
-Michigan
-MIT
-Cornell
-Princeton
CMU is not just strong in the Sciences and the Fine Arts. It also has an excellent Business school (Tepper) and a top notch Economics departments. It is also strong in Psychology.
On the other hand, if one is interested in other Social Sciences (Anthropology, Political Science or Sociology) and the Humanities (Classics, English, History, Philosophy), CMU will probably not be optimal.
Carnegie Mellon is at the very highest tier in musical theater, acting, stage design. It’s slightly behind in industrial and graphic design, though still very strong.
