Hi,
I'm probably applying to Temple (as a sophomore transfer), and have a couple questions:

1) How difficult is it for non-majors to take art classes? I know classes are generally reserved for majors at most schools, but how do you think this is at Temple? Would I be able to get into an art class my first semester (as a soph.) if I'm majoring in something else?

2) Is there any significant city park or accessible suburban park in the area? I love cities, but sometimes I want to get away from the constant noise, buildings, etc.

3) How is public transportation in Philly and are there many bike paths (or at least bike people)?

4) What are some of Temples strongest programs?

I don’t know about the art programs at Temple but can answer your other questions. Temple U is served by 2 subway stops, buses, and a train station. All will take you to “center city” (about 1 mile away) and the surrounding areas where you will find restaurants, shopping, museums, etc. that you would associate with a metropolitan location.
In the middle of this downtown area, the Parkway and Fairmount Park begins. The Parkway, similar in design to the Champs Elysee houses museums, cafes, fountains etc. on either side of a wide boulevard, capped at the end with the Phila. Museum of Art. Behind the art museum, Fairmount Park begins on either side of the Schuylkill River, going for about 8 or 10 miles with bike paths and bikers, joggers, rowers, fisherman, walkers, picnicers etc. It’s a pretty popular place.
Good luck! Hope this helps
The city has just recently made dedicated bike lanes in the downtown area. They don’t seem to be getting a great reception though as some cyclists have been ignoring the traffic signals and pedestrian traffic causing 2 fatalities.

Fairmount park is 9,200 acres – one of the largest municipal parks in the country.

As far as I know, our public transportation is the most expensive in the country – $2 one way on the bus/subway.

There are lots of bikers around Temple and in Philadelphia – you’ll get around fine if you bring one.

Our strongest programs are our humanities (liberal arts, communications, and education). We have the strongest Aesthetic Philosophy program in the country, which might interest you if you like art.

We do have a radio, but I’ve never listened to it. It’s there, but not prominent.

thanks for your responses! definitely satisfied in the nature/biking regard!

I have another question though…looking through the website it didn’t actually seem like there were that many student clubs given the size of the school. Is that true? Is the community focused on academics/non-Temple stuff, and not really a social center?
