Stuck in a rut

Hello I am new to this group and I would really appreciate your guys help and support. I am 23 threes years old, I have been living on my own since i was 18 and paying for everything on my own since then. My parents live in NY and I live NJ and they refuse to help me fill out my fsfa forms. I talked to my career advisor and he said that it is nearly impossible to get a student loan with out filling your fsfa forms. I feel I have put of going to college too long as it is, I was wondering if there was a way I could take out a student loan and get around filling my fsfa forms. thank you for your time :D

At age 24, I believe that you would be considered independent and would not need your parent’s FAFSA info. I am sorry that you are dealing with this and do not have your parents’ support.

I believe this restriction was changed in the past few years and dependent students now can submit FAFSA without the parents’ information and take an unsubsidized Stafford loan. I think the school will ask you to have your parents sign a statement that they are refusing to provide that info and are no longer supporting you. If you’re talking about loans for next year, you should be considered an independent student when you file the 12/13 FAFSA. as musicmom said, so parental info won’t be required. Good luck!

This is not an easy option, but it’s worth looking into. I worked at a school where many students wanted to do this, but only one actually got the loan without parent information. The federal regulation requires that the parents sign a statement indicating that they will not provide any support to the student … monetary, housing, insurance, etc. It’s not as simple as “not supporting.” Talk to your school about how they want this documented, if they will even do it. If you get the waiver, your only aid option is unsubsidized loans at the dependent level for your year in school.
