Hey, I’m a current junior and I’m really interested in OSU. I was wondering if a few people could tell me about the overall student body. I know that they are all very passionate about their school and have a lot of school pride, but that’s about the extent of what I know (although it is a huge plus). I’ve gone to a wealthy and conservative high school, and I was looking for a college that would be more diverse, open minded, and down to earth. Would this describe the overall student body at OSU? Thanks!

I'm only a senior in HS, but many of my friends are currently going to OSU. Also, as OSU is one of my top picks, I've visited there numerous times and talked to a number of alumni.

My overall impression is that OSU is super diverse. You can pretty much surround yourself with whomever you desire. Want to lock yourself in a room and study books all day with anti-social nerds? They're here. Want to party every single night and explore the wilder side of Columbus? Yep, that crowd is here too. And of course, there are many, many groups between those two extremes and in to all kinds of different things.

I've heard some people say they felt like they were lost at OSU because it was too big. But for the most part, if you dig around a bit, I hear it's really easy to find your niche.

And school spirit... Yeah. 'Nuff said. :-)

I'm a first year at OSU.

First of all, all the students I've met are extremely down to earth and friendly. I came from a very competitive high school and am really glad I haven't encountered that sort of snotty one-up-each-other attitude here. As far as open-mindedness, it seems like the general attitude is "live and let live."

As far as diversity goes, there are several different levels. Economically it's very diverse (as any large state flagship would be.) You have the über rich kids and the ones working their way through school. It's also politically diverse, there's a good number of democrats, republicans, libertarians, you name it. Intellectually, I know kids who got into Harvard as well as people who considered OSU a match or reach.

Racially it could be more diverse, but with such a huge school even a small percentage of the student body is a lot of people. It's mostly white Ohioans, but there is a huge number of international students. I'd agree with Speaker that you can find anything you want.
