student council - fail :(

I'm in 8th grade. I ran for the treasure in the student council this year but did not get elected. I'm not happy. It would be okay if the right people (other than me) got in. But in my school, the person who is elected as the president... I don't know what to say. she can't even manage to get decent grade in school. I was hoping to get in the council, and was hoping another student to be the president. He is smart and very good at helping others. Nobody seems to like us. the people who were elected spent a lot of money making t-shirts, waistband, etc. I made posters. my parents wouldn't allow me to spend much money. I don't know how to explain this whole thing. Is this a stupidity contest or what?! Anybody has similar feelings?

The word you’re looking for is “popularity”. It’s a popularity contest. That’s what an election entails. It’s not a meritocracy, it’s a democracy. If you think you can do a better job, try to convince people of that.

And yes, money often buys elections. Get used to that, at least until the Socialist Revolution. *Tiocfaidh

This is HSL not MSL.

Sad thing is, the OP already has over 200 posts. MSL is inevitable… then, one day, a 4th grader will ask to be chanced for Harvard, and ESL will begin… then a 4 year old will ask if “nap time” has too little rigor for MIT, and PSL will begin.

agree with BillyMC. Most people will vote for someone who is popular - star football player, someone who ‘bribes’ with all the goodies, the funny comedian at school. People in my school voted for a homeroom rep who promised donuts.

If you make yourself known in school, you’ve got a better chance than if you were (sad to say) a no named student. This doesn’t mean to make a bad reputation for yourself.

Even in university student council elections, most campaigners give out free shirts, food, or anything to make people who don’t care much about the elections to ‘give a vote’ because of the freebies.

Thank goodness I’ll be gone by then BillyMc.

You can come back in 60 years for NHL.

What if I don’t like hockey?

Oh, I bet you can figure out what that really meant.

I can, but I prefer to rag on hockey.

By the way, it stands for Nursing Home Life. Just in case anyone else is having trouble.

Correct. Of course, if you don’t like hockey, you can petition for the name to be changed to ALL.

Why would they make students waistbands??

^ you don’t wear extra waistbands? Wut a l0zr

Hey! Mapleleafs26 loved hockey. Don’t tarnish his legacy!

you should consider making friends and being popular.

For the record, I showered between posts 10 and 11. That’s just how awesome I am.

Either make yourself popular, or forget about running for the student council. I pretty much gave up, even though at one point I badly wanted to serve in one. Now I’m doing French and math club. they’re more fun.

^^ sweet dudddddeeeee high fives

I’m with luv2sk8. School SGA is 100% a popularity contest over here. My friend is Student Member of the Board and he beat the other fully qualified candidate (county lobbying and initiator of so many policies) with mainly his stickers alone - they were pretty spiffy stickers though. (:
But, yeah, clubs are the way to go. More done, more fun.

Since Student Council, for the most part, is a popularity contest do you guys think it really means much on an application?
