How is life at CMU? Is it social? Is there enough time to balance studies and social life?

Just looking for different opinions. Thanks!

I am simply asking

lol just joak-im around/… (go bulls)

Current student here: yes. The answer is yes.

If you make time for your studies and your friends and your sleep, you can do all three. It might take a bit of time to get into the swing of how to pull that off (maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months, or maybe even a few semesters to get it down fully), but you will.

Most of my friends here (myself included) manage to average 8 hours of sleep a day, and getting good grades, and having friends and going out. It’s possible, but you’re probably going to have to work differently/harder than you were used to in high school.

This is true not just of Carnegie Mellon, but also the careers it prepares you for — your life doesn’t get less busy after college. Talking to current/former students, one of the #1 things they say they value most from their time here was that they learned how to balance friends, sleep, and work.

And there are an unbelievable amount of resources (people and otherwise) here to help you get there. :)

@sockersocket great response. I really appreciate it. Thanks!

As a current student who fits the typical overachiever/do everything at CMU mold, I can tell you that as long as you’re willing to work at time management, anything is possible. I spent the past semester working three on campus jobs, participating in research, taking a full course schedule (5 classes plus a mini) and I still have time to take care of myself and sleep and hang out with friends. I think a lot of this is because I schedule my “fun” time to be while participating in extracurricular activities and I always make sure I have a few evenings free to have fun and hang out with friends. It is completely and entirely what you make of it, and here it’s very easy to get sucked into the stressful academic rigor. But I promise that it is very possible to do basically anything as long as you keep your heart in the work (hehe get it?)

One thing that I’ve noticed here is that I want to do more things with less time. Like, I have a lot more work than I did in high school, but I wasn’t overly involved with too many things in high school, yet here I’m in Greek Life, going to be TAing 112, and teaching a StuCo. And I still definitely had a decent amount of time to relax with friends, sleep etc last semester with a heavy workload. It’s a great feeling seeing everything that you can achieve in just a semester, and it pushes you to do more. You just learn how to manage your time well…it just happens.
