First of all, I have to admit I am very ignorant about the realm of financial aid. I read that the student loans are to be paid back after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time status. I understand that there is a grace period depending on the loan type. What if a student pursues graduate studies after graduation from college? Does he need to make payments for his undergraduate loans while in graduate school? Is it possible to get federal subsidized loans for graduate studies?

If you are in grad school, you do not have to start your loan repayment.

I don’t believe there are subsidized loans for grad school anymore…I could be wrong…but that’s what I think!

The subsidized loan program for grad students is no longer available effective with the current award year. Grads can borrow up to $20,500 in unsub Stafford per year. Grad PLUS loans, which are credit-based, are available, as well.

thumper1 & kelsmom,

Thanks for your help! So it is important to get schoalrship/TA/RA to finance graduate education.

Our son graduated from UIUC with a B.A. in History in December 2013. He’s been accepted by 3 different law schools in IL (UIUC, SIU-Carbondale, and NIU), has been offered full-tuition scholarships at 2 of those 3 law schools, and is negotiating with the 3rd in hopes of talking them into a full-tuition scholarship, too. We know that, once he’s actually enrolled in law school, he can get a deferment on his undergrad student loans – but law school doesn’t start until August. When should he apply for a deferment? I assume he might have to make a few payments between now (January) and August - or is there a grace period before the payment requirement kicks in, and would it be long enough to cover him until law school starts?
