My friend, who is a freshman, was recently told that she would not be receiving a scholarship next year that she had been planning on getting. This scholarship would have been full tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend along with a book stipend, so you can imagine the effect this has on her current plans. She is currently working already during school, and has three jobs already lined up for this summer. Her parents are very wealthy, but refuse to help her out with any college payments. They won't even co-sign a loan for her, which makes it nearly impossible to get one. I was wondering if anyone had any information on loans or grants that would possibly be available to her? She is a good student, with about a 3.2 GPA, is very involved in the student senate, and is currently in the Marine ROTC program (where the scholarship would have come from). The main problem is that she is not able to get any need-based funding because of her parents income, but they refuse to help her out at all. Any information or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yikes, I hope someone has some good ideas for you. My son1 has a friend (who was top 10 in high school) in a similar situation, upper middle/wealthier parents who won’t pay and not enough scholarships and money for next year (had enough lined up for freshman and sophomore year)… we just ran into him last week and he’s started working full-time and is taking a leave of absence for a year to raise money to return and to give him time to find some options/scholarships, etc. to finish up the final two years hopefully at his very good flagship where he’s been for the past two years. My husband and I are scratching our heads about his whole situation and have been since he was in high school and we heard what was going on. If he manages to pull this off and I were in a position to hire that kid when he does graduate, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

It bothers me so much! She works SO hard, I don’t know of anyone who deserves a scholarship, or at least some way to help pay for school, more than her. She devotes so much time into the student government and rotc, as well as keeping up with school and working crazy amounts. There will be days where she will stay up studying until 4 AM, come to PT at 5 AM, have a full classload that day, have senate meetings that night until midnight, and then have to go to work at 6 AM the next morning! I want to help as much as I can, so if anyone has ANY ideas, please let me know!

What happened to the Marine ROTC scholarship she was counting on? Army, Navy and Air Force each have in-school scholarships if the USMC won’t offer her one and she is willing to serve.

She was granted a scholarship last summer, but through switching schools it somehow got messed up somewhere, and she didn’t get it for this year. She has been doing ROTC for college program, and planning on picking up a scholarship. They recently told us that no scholarships would be granted to college program students this year, because the government/ Navy (I am in Navy rotc, Navy and Marine Corps are both in the same rotc programs) is cutting back because of lack of funds (We are poor). She is very dedicated to the Marine Corps, so switching branches is not really an option for her.
