Student Marshall

Anyone know about this?

i've heard it around as 'the higheset honor the university can bestow upon a student'

but i haven't been able to find anything on it.

What about it do you want to know?

One of my friends got it. I only know what I've heard from my friend. What do you want to know?

just wanted to know the significance. I know a student who was just notified.

Historically, about 4% of each class is named Student Marshall (announced in the Spring of the 3rd year). It's based primarily on grades, with a "contribution" to the university component. It is basically the only general award to undergraduates that I know of.

So is this like a slightly less prestigious Phi Beta Kappa award?

It seems to be the opposite. I'll use the Class of 2004 as an example. There were 42 student marshals and 104 Phi Beta Kappa's. Of the 42 student marshals, 18 were named Phi Beta Kappa as 3rd years, 21 as 4th years (and 4 were not Phi Beta Kappa). It seems a little harder to get Phi Beta Kappa as a 3rd year than be selected student marshal, but much harder to get student marshal than Phi Beta Kappa at some point.

so PBK third year is an accomplishment?

Maroon8, where'd you get the 2004 data?

I searched for various words like "student marshal" on the UChicago site to turn up the lists from previous years.

Of course, junior PBK is an accomplishment. It means you're in the top 2-3% of students, academically.

I was a Student Marshall, and recall being invited to a few banquets. I do not recall having to do any work there. My advisor said that it was a big honor.
