Student Medical Insurance

Hello. I'm currently a student in the UK considering a PhD or Masters in the US, probably California. In trying to work out how much it would cost me, I've been looking at student medical insurance online (just the ones that come up first on Google) and I have quite a few questions. Being used to universal healthcare, not including dentistry, I literally have no idea how it works in the US. Which are the trusted providers? Do campuses have their own doctors for check-ups? How much should I expect to pay? Are there any particular exclusions I need to look out for? Are there discounts for becoming a permanent US resident? What coverage limit will I need? They all seem to be around $300,000 but this sounds really low, especially if (touch wood) I needed surgery after being in a car accident or something.

Any and all advice is appreciated.
