"Student of Merit, Harvard-Bound Diep Shines" (La Jolla, CA)

LA JOLLA ---- Armed with a full-ride academic scholarship to Harvard, a 4.05 high school grade point average, a 2290 SAT score, fluency in four languages, a history of community service and a desire to travel, Preuss School senior Kelly Diep is poised to fly.

"I'm leaving the nest," said the 17-year-old Diep, the youngest of three siblings to leave for college. "My mom is kind of overprotective. She tries to baby me. So I'm being extra nice to her these days."

Kelly was named one of 10 "Students of Merit" last week in a scholarship program sponsored by the North County Times. The award comes with a $750 scholarship that Diep said she may use to help buy a computer for college, and maybe a coat to insulate her from the cold Massachusetts winters...

Born in Vietnam, Kelly moved with her family to the United States when she was 4. She understands Vietnamese, and speaks two dialects of Chinese including Mandarin. She hopes to study in China for a semester while attending Harvard...

... In her spare time, Kelly works at Starbucks in La Costa.

Doesn't sound like THIS girl is "rich," as you claimed before you edited.

"A full-ride academic scholarship to Harvard" and she also captained the cheer squad!

yes i know, i live in san diego, so la jolla is a rich area, but thats a charter school for poor kids.

i met her at prefrosh weekend...thats so crazy...

4.05 on what scale? =O she sounds like me!! except lol i'm not a cheerleader (so cannot do any cartwheels etc..) oh but! she evolved from an ongoing bad financial situation

lol i wish i could work "spare time" at a coffee shop =) does it mean that SHE chooses hours??! >< why won't the starbucks here do that?

Wow that's crazy. 4.05 is weighted (A=5 for AP) however that gpa is probably wrong. "Spare time" at a coffee shop is probably a wrong choice of words. Congratulations to Kelly (and no it isn't me...).
