My school is a large normal public high school. We have a good amount of students taking hard classes and excelling in them but very few people have gotten into the Ivy Leauge from my school. For example only one person has ever gone to Harvard, and that is my goal. (A huge reach I know)
Anyhow, does anyone have a general answer as to why not many people go to the Ivy Leauges from my school?
Harvard targets an entering class size of 1660; there are over 37,000 high schools in the US, not even taking into account home-schooled and international applicants. That means, on average, 35K HS’s have no students accepted to Harvard. It’s all in the numbers.
^ This. You have it backwards. The fact that anyone has gone to Harvard is an amazing anomaly.
My guess would be because their main motivation in applying was to attend a prestigious school. As they shot off applications to schools the size of large publics and small LACs, located in the largest cities and the most remote villages, adcoms realized they were trophy hunting for the name “Ivy”. Not what the adcoms are looking for. They try to find kids that have a strong idea of what they’re looking for and can explain to interviewers and in essays why the school is right for them and what they bring to the table to help the adcoms build a strong class that can learn from and help each other.
In your previous post http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1820962-will-my-freshman-schedule-decreases-my-chances-of-getting-into-harvard-or-yale-thank-you.html it appears that 2 very different schools, Harvard and Yale, are indistinguishable in your eyes.
Yes I like them both a lot! They are great schools providing great education and I am not going to apply just to boost my ego. I am rather open minded and have many ideas of a great school. I have visited both Yale and Harvard before and they are both amazing! I simply want to apply to these schools because I love the feel of the colleges and they provide the ideal learning environment in my eyes. I do know many other schools that are not ivies that provide excellent education as well and I plan to apply to those too. However, it is important to have dreams and goals to help motivate you. Anyhow, thank you for your comment it was very helpful.
How many people applied in the first place?
To be fair I don’t think there are huge differences between Harvard and Yale. Both are mid-size research universities, with long histories, residential colleges and strengths in a wide variety of departments.
It could be that not many students have even applied from your school. Do you have Naviance?
And even if they were accepted, maybe they accepted an offer from another school that gave them substantial merit.
I’m not sure how many applied and I don’t have access to Naviance yet but I will make sure to check!
I don’t know what grade you are in in HS but I’d strongly suggest not considering one school, particularly a hyper-competitive school to be your “dream school.” There are tons of amazing colleges and universities out there. Do your best, take rigorous classes, get involved, study for the standardized tests and then see how things play out.
