students interested in stock trading

Hey all,

I know a lot of prospective HS-graduates are looking at UC Irvine. Kudos for doing your due diligence as college is the next big step in your life; it's not a decision to be taken lightly.

Maybe I can spice up UC Irvine relative to other schools you're looking at.

This fall quarter, I started a club called STAT (Speculative Trading & Arbitrage Team). It's not a typical finance/business club, it's geared solely towards financial market speculation. The club offers professional-level trading software to all members for the $1 annual due. It's a program from Interactive Brokers called the 'Student Trading Lab'. It's strictly paper money so there's no real risk involved and it's a great way to learn hands-on about the market. There's real time data and all 5 major trading instruments (stocks, bonds, futures, options, forex), and so much more.

Continue to research other universities -- other UCs, USC, Stanford, Cal Tech, MIT, Ivy's, undergraduate, post-graduate, I don't care which -- and you will see that there aren't any organizations or course subjects about trading. Finance, yes. Accounting, yes. Investment banking, yes. Corporate finance, yes. Investing in stocks like Warren Buffett, maybe a few. But absolutely none about trading -- day trading, swing trading, options trading, global macro, systems trading, algo-trading, etc. But there's one right here at UC Irvine. And I want this club to survive long after I'm gone, which is why I am posting here. Trading is not about wearing an Armani suit, rubbing shoulders with CEOs in a big conference room, or working for Goldman Sachs, it's about buying and selling instruments for a profit -- and you can do it anywhere. If you're interested in that, give us a look.

Anyway, I'll keep it short. I will gladly answer any questions.

Thanks.

I also want to add 2 more things

A) Our club caters to total market beginners and I firmly believe that concepts about risk/reward, market psychology, and executing good ideas will be beneficial to all students, even outside of the trading domain.

B) There is no get-rich-quick message, no stock tips, no “secret sauce” strategy being sold for $200, none of that. We talk about the risks and the difficulties of trading first and foremost.

When does your club hold meetings? This sounds interesting. :)

We hold meetings every Monday from 5:30-7:00pm at RH 192. Tomorrow’s seminar will be about the mechanics of trading – the trade setup, exit strategy, risk/reward, etc. Non-UCI students/HS-students, if you want to attend, feel free, and I will add anyone to the trading lab registration form for the software (although you can’t technically be considered a ‘member’ as a non-UCI student but who cares, you get all the same perks)

Our winter quarter info is up as well.

damn bro if i knew about this before i would apply to UCI for sure.
A little off topic but do you know any majors UCI offers finance related? I want to trade for my career and didnt like UCI at first because they had no finance major…but now an interesting club =]

Hey mrgrape,

UCI has a management minor for undergrads now, but still no finance major. If it means anything, hedge funds (see: RenTech & Jim Simons) increasingly look for programming majors (one of UCI’s strengths) and math, statistics, physics, etc.

What kind of trading do you want to do?

sup man I am mainly a technical trader focusing on stocks… But I would like to get into forex eventually.

I looked up ur whole main website, tweeter, and all the info looks super legit for the college level compared to normal clubs I have seen as a sophomore.
I know that math, stats, and physic majors have a better chance at becoming a quant/trader but I rather study what I love which is finance/trading. And unfortunately UCI doesn’t offer that…which is a huge bummer…in fact no UC’s offer finance…even Haas.

I applied to only CSU’s such as Cal Poly SLO due to their whole program being geared towards finance geeks like us.

What kind of majors are the students at your club majoring in at UCI? You?

BTW props on all the knowledge you gained on it and the dedication towards it…I could already tell reading some of the info on the site. I did not expect other college students to be at that level

Appreciate the compliments. So far it’s pre-dominantly economics and CS/ICS majors. I targeted the obvious. We haven’t done a lot of aggressive recruiting/marketing across all spectrums of majors. I am an economics major.

We just finished our last seminar of our first quarter in existence a couple hours ago. We have 60-70 members.

It’s cool you’re actively seeking out your interests. I don’t know what broker/platform you have access to but if you’re interested in IB’s TWS, just PM me and I’ll add you to the trading lab registration form. It’s a paper trading account, expires May 11th.

bump. we’re getting a lot of new members :)

Anyone, including HS students, is welcome to come and check it out. Only trading club in California. 4 years of experience with financial market trading (we also have a finance club, I’m part of both) ----> compete with New Yorkers for hedge fund openings :)

If that doesn’t entice you, maybe money can. I run the club and here are my verified results past 18 months:
