My S is very interested in U. of Maine. He is out-of-state (VT) and is very interested in environmental science. For those of you familiar with U. of Maine (UMO?) what kind of OOS kids gravitate towards U. of Maine? For all students, what range of subjects/academics are appealing? For my son, he is an outdoorsy kind of person with a pinch of prep in him, and while he loves VT, he's also looking for a UVM-type campus that is not so close to dear old mom and dad.

Also, if anyone is familiar with the Orono area ... do kids have to drive to do something fun or interesting or can they walk from campus to somewhere easily? If they have to take a bus how easy is it to find one late at night when you're working your way back to campus?

Here’s some info I received from PM from a student in Maine. Sounds like a possible fit for my S, who visited since I posted above and liked the area and two professors that he met.

“University of Maine has a pretty campus. On one side of it is a river, and the school lets kids borrow kayaks to go out on it. All of the buildings look nice, too. Kids from all over Maine go to UMO because it has so many programs and because it’s the flagship, so it’s hard to say that there’s an exact image of what a typical kid from there would look like. I guess it has a reputation for partying, but it doesn’t seem like there’s pressure to do it. The students at UMO live either on campus or in nearby apartments. It has a reputation for being strong in engineering and sciences. The location isn’t that exciting, though. Orono is a small town but it’s about twenty minutes from Bangor, which has a lot of stores and whatnot.”
