My child (white) is an athletic recruit at DU and attends a very diverse HS which is about 45% SOC. My child is no political crusader on race issues but has a tribe that consists of kids from many backgrounds especially Af Am and Latino. I would be curious to know from DU students of color, how well they find themselves integrated into every facet of life at the college, whether the level of cluelessness they encounter from suburban preppies is typical? less than expected? worse than expected? In general, how they feel about Denison’s inclusiveness. The university seems so wonderful on so many levels, but I’d like to get a fuller sense of this issue.
I’m the wrong demographic, but I can respond as a parent. My kid attended a very diverse public high school and his friend group cut across all kinds of demographics because of his ECs. He specifically wanted a place which felt open and welcoming, and liked Denison, Grinnell, Kalamazoo, Earlham (and one of my favorites, Knox). I’ll PM you –
