Odds are, they put more thought into the ballot than a random, spur of the moment petition.

Just watched the movie yesterday. Man, that gal with the 8 inch waist could really dance. Love the color at the end when they pull open the barn doors with those fabulous red over the top gowns they were wearing framing the scene. Still pretty, but not racist. Snow snow snow snow snow…

A character in the time-travel episode expressed surprise that McCoy and Kirk didn’t know who Clark Gable was. That’s when DS turned to me to ask, “who’s Clark Gable?”
These were soldiers who were away from home dreaming of being home for christmas.
What is the fool’s point? To belittle students who don’t know anything about the song???
Maybe it’s to belittle fools who mindlessly jump on bandwagons.
The way he asked for students to sign the petition seemed like a subtle pressure- almost like a social psych experiment. Easier for the student to sign than to walk away and tell the guy where to go.
Lots and lots and lots of very intelligent adults will sign a petition without having a clue what it’s about.
A few years ago, an old friend sent me a petition to sign electronically. Tens of thousands of adults had signed an e-petition, going to the White House, against drunk driving.
I refused to sign.
I’m certainly not pro-drunk driving. But I couldn’t see what good the petition would do. It offered no plan of attack-- no suggestions that the President could or should take in combatting this issue. I think we can assume that the President of the United States is already aware that DUI is against the law, and would advise anyone not do drive while impaired. In short, the petition read as though it had been written by a high school sophomore, railing against something he thought was bad.
It had something like 30,000 signatures. But it had no point.
The college kids in this story are no different from all the adults-- many of them (like my friend) with advanced degrees. Their hearts are in the right place. It’s their effectiveness I question.
But change starts with having your heart in the right place.
It would be helpful if the students proposed an alternative, rather than just an outright ban. Perhaps, “I’m dreaming of a snowy Christmas” or better yet, “Our multicultural nation is collectively dreaming of a holiday without gun violence, just like the ones we used to know” da-dah da-dah da-dah. Now that would be a carol for our times!

I’m not sure I know who McCoy and Kirk are on Star Trek. Never liked / watched that show. Spock is the one with pointy ears and one of the other actors does ads for Priceline and is one of the law shows and now I’ve just exhausted my Star Trek knowledge. I never knew who this George Takei guy was either til he’s all over FB but I guess he acted on it too. Oh well!

I would sign a petition to do away with “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
Ha! I have to say, I don’t get the fuss about that song. I see it as flirtatious, not predatory. Nowhere is he forcing her to stay with him. She’s arguing with herself, because some part of her does want to stay.
