Study abroad at London-UCL

Hello, I just want people’s opinions on studying abroad at University College London (specially those who study or have studied there). I am a student at a US college with concerns mainly regarding budget and some miscellaneous things. As of now I am already accepted and enrolled at UCL for the fall semester, but would be willing to withdrawn if necessary. I would appreciate if anyone can provide insight into any one of the following concerns:

  • About how much where your living expenses (it would be helpful if you could state how much you went out, partied, etc)
  • How good is the food provided by UCL meal plan? is it "all you can eat", and if not, are you satisfied with the amount served? I ask this because I tend to eat a lot.
  • How much did you get to travel (both within England and Europe)? How much did you spend on traveling?
  • What is a typical weekend like?

I guess that overall, I would just like to hear people’s sentiments on the UCL study abroad experience. The thing is that I have really enjoyed my experience at my US college so far, and I am not sure if studying abroad at UCL would be worth it, specially considering the high cost of living.

It depends a lot on what’s included in your StudyAbroad package: is your room & board included or not?

London is wildly expensive as a city, but it can be a great experience.

Yup, room and board is included. I am offered a meal plan that covers breakfast and dinner mon-fri. For all other meals, I will have to either cook or eat out.

Those are the biggest expenses, so that’s good. UCL students that I know say they can get by with spending ~L80 - L120/week (including food, transport, phone, some random study materials). If you eat in 2x/day, that should leave you plenty of money for lunch & drinking (b/c let’s be honest- that’s the main other expense).

The pub food is cheaper. If you have a fridge get premise food from Marks and Spencer, lots of cheap and tasty Indian food.

Have you asked your US college to put you in touch with others who have completed the same program in the past?
