Study Abroad ends beginning of July. Ideas to find internships with only 6-7 weeks left of summer

Hello,

My son is going to New Zealand for Spring 2015. He is a Mech. Engineering major. The semesters there are shifted because the seasons are flipped so he won't be back until the beginning of July. He will be finishing his Jr year and usually that summer before Sr year is an important one to get an internships. However, summer internships usually start mid May to first week in June so he cannot apply to them.

What thoughts/ideas do you have on how he can find a short term opportunity for those 6-7 weeks?

That may be a tough thing. I hope he finds something!

Thanks. We really don’t have any friends who are engineers so there is no one to ask if they want some short term summer help. It is the only bad part about him doing this study abroad.

Lakemom - I was talking this over with DH last night. (He and I are both MechE, but his employer hires engineering interns). It seems unlikely that he will find many employers interested in training an intern for just a a 6-7 week intern. A few months for summer is common since convenient with school schedules… but the 5 to 6 month co-ops generally considered even more valuable. Of course he should keep trying.

Now here are some backup ideas in case needed

 • university research (at own campus or somewhere else … google REU)
• look for other for other campus opportunities, such as science camps
 • summer project in a volunteer organization, maybe in 3rd world country
 • internship after graduation … I’ve heard about several engineering grads doing this

Good luck!

All good ideas Colorado mom. I agree, his best bet will be doing an internship right after graduation next year but the other ideas are worth looking into. Thanks!

My school requires 10 weeks in the summer to be officially considered an intern.

Seirsly. If you read the ads, each company’s descriptions vary as to what an intern role involves so I don’t think you can set it to a number of weeks. An intern, which can also be a new grad or even in some fields, they still call them interns if they have less than 2 years experience. It is what you write that you did for what ever date you did it on your resume that matters.
