I'm going to be a science major next year and have already started thinking about study abroad....it's something I'm really excited about. However, in looking at Notre Dame's study abroad website, it seems that most locations, especially those in Europe, are geared towards students not majoring in math/science fields. Where do science majors study abroad? Do they study abroad as much as history/philosophy/classics majors? Do students studying in locations like England and Dublin ever get over to the mainland Europe to travel and visit?

Don't know any specifics about Notre Dame study abroad but my Ds school recommends trying to schedule study abroad in the 1st 2 years while you are still working on lower level gen ed requirements as it may be difficult to find equivilant classes in the higher major requirements. She is also planning a science major and it does look a little harder to find those classes so we are thinking her soph or at the latest early junior year. In fact I am beginning to wonder if study abroad may make it difficult to get her degree and vet school pre reqs done in 4 years - but the experience will be worth an extra 1/2 (hopefully only 1/2) year. They also recommend planning the scheduling your classes early so you don't gobble up all the gen ed type classes before you go abroad. having looked at some class possibilities in Australia (one place under consideration) it would be a lot easier to find humanities/soc type classes than her specific science requirements.

It is very easy to get from England to the rest of Europe. There is the chunnel which goes direct from London to paris or Brussels. There are very cheap air fares (so long as you book in advance) to most of Europe. If you are there for the summer there are excellent train passes to get you around. I imagine Dublin is the same as far as air fares but have no experience of it. Fantastic opportunities to actually live there and travel rather than the worlwind tours. I am excited for my D and a bit jealous to. Good luck and have fun planning and researching.

Rising Soph son just received a letter from the engineering school today! Funny you should start this thread!! In a nutshell(!), the College of Eng offers a 6-wk program in London, England for summer, 2008. The letter says that it will offer two 3 credit courses and offer field trips to significant eng projects in England. It also indicates that if there is enough interest, there will be a second program in Alcoy, Spain. The letter also indicates that the eng program is "so contrained at present" that it is difficult to try to spend the fall sem of JR year in London and still maintain graduation on time. By completing a summer program, I suppose one can stay on track with courseload, etc. Both programs cost about the same. Don't know if son would be that intersted in these programs and cost is pretty steep! At any rate, hope this helps and it still sounds exciting to have the opportunity!!!

whatever you do, do not go abroad during the fall semester!
