Studying Abroad

I didn't really know where to put this.

I'm interesting in spending a few weeks in France this summer, either just as a homestay or to take a few courses at a university. There are several programs in which one just pays and goes, but I've heard that it can backfire when it comes to college application time. Are there any exchange programs that are also impressive on applications?

It won't backfire - there are some very competitive college programs though - just do some research... if they are competitive, they'll advertise their low admit rate.

I have been researching, but all these programs are simply overwhelming. I'm asking if anyone here has actually participated in a scholarship program. I'd really like to stay with a host family and study for the summer at a university, preferably Sorbonne.

If you look at the actual Common Application, there are two places where you could include information on classes you take in the summer. The first asks for secondary schools, including summer schools, and summer and other programs you have attended. The second asks for colleges/universities at which you have taken courses for credit and requests an official transcript including grades earned. You may want to think about that distinction when you choose a summer program.
