Sub-par Freshman and Sophomore years. Chance at top schools?

Although this is all speculation and precarious to the grades I receive this upcoming year, I was wondering if a said student who received a 3.5-6 GPA during freshman and Sophomore years and was not entirely involved in their school until around Junior year would have a chance at getting into top schools. I was in student govt. during Freshman and Sophomore years, but never really expressed my interests. So, assume that I have the avg. test scores for the Ivies and receive a 4.0 uw my next 2 years and become more involved with my interests/passion. Would I have a chance at admission to any given top school even with my first 2 years weighing me down?

Well, you’re going to be applying to colleges by January of your senior year at the latest. So what you really need to ask yourself is this: what will your GPA and ECs look like after your junior year and the fall term?

I don’t know the details, but even with a 4.0 from now on your GPA would be-at most-3.8 or thereabouts. You’ll have a bunch of ECs that you’ve been doing for just one year. Do your best from this point onwards, but don’t count on getting into schools like the Ivies.

@NotVerySmart I know that an upward trend isn’t as good as a 4.0 trend, (obviously) but isn’t it the next best thing for when it comes to GPA?

Ivies don’t need to consider the next best thing when they have thousands of the best thing. :stuck_out_tongue:

This pretty much sums it up for OP. There isn’t a kid with a 4.0 for every spot in Ivy League schools’ fresman classes, so a 4.0 isn’t a requirement, but it will always be easier to get into an Ivy with a 3.9+ GPA than otherwise.

An upward trend is better than a GPA that’s stagnated or even gone down over time, but it’s still no 3.9.

Your post asks us to assume a lot; maybe you’ll get above-average test scores, or maybe you’ll score way below these schools’ ranges. Maybe you’l have a 4.0 these next two years, but the odds are against it. Don’t worry about colleges, stay off collegeconfidential, and work your tail off. Post again a year from now. Wherever you end up going, you’ll do well as long as you put in a strong effort.

Dylan, if you have very strong extra curricular activities they can help overcome these deficiencies at times. Did you achieve anything big that blows out your GPA deficiency?
