This is a dreadfully superficial question, but as someone with some subcultural affiliations who was just accepted (!) I'm curious if I will find people with similar interests. I've heard that all types are friends with each other, which sounds amazing. I wonder, though, if there are "goth" types at Grinnell? Not depressed, just interested in the goth scene.

Thanks, and sorry for the dumb question. Heh.

Now when you say Goth?

Well, hmm. i’ve seen a few around who would fit your mold? Thing is Grinnell is so diverse that your not going to find exactly one scene but multiple scenes mixing and matching if that helps? College is about exploring, so who knows? Maybe some other 2015-ers are too?

Hah, I can answer this question. There is very little subculture at Grinnell, other than the pot-smoking hipster. Sad but true. I think the closest we have are the Dag (foam sword) people.
Of course we have the token Metalhead, Punk and Skater. But that’s about it. And then there is me, somewhat token Goth with some metal influence (I don’t like labels but it’s probably accurate). And I am pretty much one of maybe five, who listen to Goth music (god, I hate this term), has subcultural affiliations back home and is known to wear too much black. Do I like it here? For the most part. Do I have friends? Yes. Do I miss having some kind of goth scene? Hell yeah. It’s always a culture shock for me going back home and returning to Grinnell, knowing that for the next 5 months, I have few people to talk to about my music and other aspects of the whole Goth scene.

But please, come. There need to be more, visible, subcultural influences at Grinnell. Especially with newer classes becoming increasingly less quirky and more normal.

I agree with _Silence. Yes come!

Also, DAG isn’t as much a subculture as a few converged into many things. xD Anyhow, Grinnell needs different folks and there are metalheads…so by all means, if there isn’t a scene, start one! =)

Ok, thanks! It’s not a big deal since there aren’t many subcultures at my high school. People probably won’t avoid talking to me because of personal style, though, right?

No. As a rule no.
Few might, but then again people like that are not worth knowing in my opinion. If anything it’s probably the opposite that people will approach you because of your style.
