My daughter is applying to schools that “recommend” subject tests.(Northwestern, Penn) Does this mean she will be penalized if she doesn’t take them? She has a 710 in the literature, which is probably so-so for her schools, but not another? Should I push her to take another next week? It’s hard to squeeze in because she didn’t take them last year when she was finishing courses.
Should she take another subject test like Math or just retake literature and try to get a higher score?
It is my understanding that “recommended” pretty means “required”. There are cases where people were admitted without it, but when comparing two students - if one has submitted and the other has not - the AOs may tend to go with the one who submitted it. IMHO.
Literature is one of the hardest tests to score well on. The 710 is respectable. I would have her take a second one. If they want two, she should submit two. She can do some sample questions on line on the College Board website and see which test would best suit her with limited time to prepare.
Recommended usually means required unless there’s a compelling reason not to include them.
