My son will be applying to Wharton but is taking the lit and history subject tests. He has taken the AP AB (4) and recently calc BC exam. I saw Wharton likes Math 2. Will this hurt his admission chances? He has a 4.19, 700 math, 760 reading ,720 written . Very strong leadership including newspaper and mock trial, and captain of a high school team.
When Penn says they recommend that you take the Math level 2, then a student should take it unless it is a financial hardship. Since your son plans to take subject tests, this does not appear to be the case. It will make him a more competitive applicant to take it and score 750+. Good luck
Its not too late to add the Math2 subject test for June SAT (he can add it on the day of the test even- just bring check for the fee to the test) or have him take it in the fall. I would not apply to Wharton without at least taking Math1-but preferably Math 2.
He should totally take the Math II exam. It has a very generous curve. Heck, even my math disabled Fine Arts major took it and got a 730. Your son should do fine on it if he’s had Calc B/C already. Just get a study guide, and take it in October.
@skeptile You’re allowed to take up to 3 subject tests in one day. Don’t even bother having him wait until October. He should just take Math II in addition to the other two in June. If he’s strong at math (which I assume he is if he’s taken AB as a sophomore and BC as a junior), he can probably get by just doing a few practice Math II exams to get a feel for the types of questions and then should be able to get a high score pretty easily. As others have mentioned, the curve is very generous. If he isn’t as comfortable with math as I’m assuming, then I guess he can wait until October.
@skeptile, SAT I score (700 math, 760 reading,720 written) may also be a little weaker if he has no hook.
