submit tape for piano?

Do people who are not applying to a music program but have piano as major extracurricular send a tape to colleges? If so, what do you send?

If piano is a big ec of yours, definitely send a tape.

Most schools have a section of their website dedicated to supplementary materials, so you should check that out. Many of them either tell you to submit pieces that most clearly demonstrate your talent/achievements or to send a piece from each time period (baroque, classical, romantic, comtemporary).

Do you just tape yourself with a little cassette player and somehow make copies or is there some other way to do it?

try recording at school

If you want to make it recording, make it nice. You have a few options: Buy a high-quality microphone and do it at home, or go to a recording studio and do it there.

Could you give me an example of a school which wants one? So far I just looked at NYU and Carnegie Mellon which say - don't send, and we discourage sending. I couldn't find anything on Wash U's website.

What schools are you looking at? I've never heard of a school that actually discourages you...
