Taking most demanding schedule at very competitive school
GPA: 3.83 uw, 4.14 w (should improve by the end of senior year)
3rd decile- I transferred from a lousy school with no honors or AP courses, bringing down my rank, while other students had an advantage of taking them in their freshman and sophomore years
SAT: highest composite: 1960 (700M/720W/540CR)
Hard of hearing--->explains my low verbal score

Bad news: I think I will get B in 2 AP courses at the end of the semester.

why do people never respond to my threads?! just take a guess- say something.

how would being hard of hearing affect your verbal score?

your reading, not listening

for some reason I dont buy that, considering u must be a good reader to get such high overall grades...

Um... I would consider it a far reach...
X<10% chance

Very weak SAT scores
Low GPA

No offense, but I don't really even know why your considering Duke...

um... i would say the exact opposite....

girl from my school got an early write from dartmouth with a 1320 and 63 / 400 rank

guy from my school got into harvard with a 1350 and 22/400 rank

affirmative action allows a large number of blacks to get into elite schools... although their qualifications are below the 25th percentile for the school. At UVA black instate students with 1100-1150 have a better chance of being accepted than white students with 1400-1450, Shocking?

i would say you have a chance, i would not be surprised at all if you were accepted. however, if you were a white female you would likely be rejected.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of awesome recs and essays. hopeforfuture, I think you have a shot.

^^ I agree. Someone (first generation) got in Duke with SAT of 1980. Nothing's impossible.

lol that means i better get into DUke, my bro went there and i have 2110

haha. yeah but you must have a special hook. someone with 1980 was a first generation immigrant.

My friend got into Stanford ED with a 1980...plus he was an Asian male.

I was that someone...I may be a first gen immigrant, but I don't believe that was the only reason I got in. I'm involved in a lot of activities that I truly CARE about and it shows - I consider myself to be a proactive person who takes the initative to explore my passions. I've founded my own community service organization through grants, I've earned numerous awards, I've worked with pre-meds on research case-studies.
The bottom line is, I <3 Duke and I let them know that mere SAT numbers are just that - mere numbers; I'm absolutely bent on making an impact on the world and Duke knows it. :)

go you! i agree

um numbers tell a lot you know... the average 1570 kid on my hallway got mostly As this first semester... go figure

^ I'm not discounting grades and/or the SAT - both are important. Just letting people know that there's more to apps than the SAT & giving hope to people who may be discouraged to apply

IHATESAT: That was disgusting.

To the OP: you have a really good chance; your ECs are really strong, and you have a high gpa. If you can pull up your SAT IIs I'd say you'd be even better off. Good luck!

Thanks for encouraging me to consider Duke, but I want to hear your BRUTAL honest opinions.

IHATESAT, I understand my SAT score is really low, and my GPA is quite low. I faced difficulties last year, and hence, I got a few Bs. Nonetheless, I still persevered by taking the most demanding courses. As a senior, I am improving academically (and mentally) this year. I got letter of recommendations from teachers who praised my hard work, my efforts, and my improvement in their classes.

My GC already explained why my verbal score is really low. I explained my situation to some admission officers (some specifically from MIT and Harvard) and they said that they doubt they will hold it against me. So, there's nothing I can do with my verbal score because I already took it three times and I will take SAT II subject test this month.

What kind of things can you tell the regional admission officer about?

i sent in my duke app today :)

I am just curious. How does being hard of hearing affect verbal score. Again, my disclaimer is I am not being critical, just wondering for the sake of knowledge...

Congrats dayo! I did yesterday and it felt great...

Verbal includes vocabulary and other elements of language that are usually absorbed through conversational speech.
