Submitting EA vs. RD

I'm a little confused about how the Common App works. If I want to submit it for my EA schools, but I've already gone ahead and listed out all the schools I'm applying to (both EA and RD), does the app only get submitted to my EA schools? Or does it go to all the schools I listed, regardless of whether they're EA or not?

The common app sends the app to whichever school you put on you my colleges list you have to individually submit each one and, in the future plans section submit weather you’re applying EA, ED, rolling admissions, RD (the choices vary upon schools). There is no problem if you send your application in September and it’s not due until January, the university will still only review your application in the period you selected.

Sorry, just to clarify, does that mean that if you submit the common app but not supplements, your app overall has not actually been submitted?

I think it depends on the school but last time I checked as soon as you submit any part of the common app the school will download it and when they do download it a “downloaded: [date]” will appear next to the thing, but they won’t review your app until you submit everything.

Wait… so technically you have to have your common app finished for both ea and rd if you’re submitting for ea and listed both ea/rd schools?

^^^

More or less. The Common App must be complete in order to submit for EA. (BTW: each school is submitted individually). That means the main application is complete to submit to RD schools too. However, most schools have a supplement. You have to complete each one in order to submit to the RD schools. Some supplements are nominal (a few more questions), and some have a school specific essay (which requires more thought).

click on “my colleges” on left and then highlight one of your colleges. Under the university name below, it will say whether that college wants the application first or the supplements and payment before the application. Follow instructions in that section. when you are ready to submit application, you can submit them all at once or one by one by selecting one university at a time.

Do NOT submit all your school apps at once. Make sure you check each one as there are slightly different questions on each school’s screen and they each have different supplements.

Do them each one at a time, check, check and double check before you hit that send button.

If you need to, the common ap will let you create a different version for different schools is say you want to submit different essays. Search here on cc or in the common app to find out how to create a different version.
