Subsidized Stafford Loan Question

Hey everyone, I just have a question about subsidized stafford loans.

Are you allowed to only take a portion of the loans that a school offers rather than taking the whole amount?

Also, if I take out a small subsidized stafford loan - imagine $500 maybe - for freshman year, can I pay that back in the summer after freshman year ends, or must I wait until after graduation to start paying back any student loans?

Thanks for any help in advance.

You can take out any amount up to what the school says you are eligible for. So If they say you can have $3000 you can take out anywhere between $0 to $3000.

You can pay it back anytime you choose. However remember a subsidized loan will not cost you any interest until you graduate or drop below half time plus a 6 month grace period. Also you usually have to pay a small origination fee so you are better off not paying the first off only to get another and pay the origination fee again.

Thanks for the quick reply. Also, I was not aware of the origination fee, so thanks for warning me about that too.
