Hi I'm an incoming freshmen and on my housing form I don't remember if I checked the box for the substance free hall. I might have thought since I don't do drugs or drink it doesn't really matter. The reason why this bothers me so much is cause a friend told me that the substance free halls are very strict with the rules and the people who live in those halls aren't fun, friendly, and out going. Is that true? Are there any Pros to living in a substance free hall?

Technically, all halls are substance free. And I’m not sure I agree with your friend, just because they live in substance free halls, it doesn’t not mean they are not outgoing. Where they are placed isn’t a good determinant of a person’s personality. But that said, should you be placed in a hall with people you may not click with (and that doesn’t really happen often), you needn’t worry. Freshman year is a great opportunity to meet lots of people (even outside your hall) and you’ll eventually settle, so don’t worry. Best of luck!

UR offers voluntary substance free rooms, not halls. If you select that box, they try to pair you with someone else who checked that box.
