Does each college(Rockey, Mathey, Butler, Wilson, Forbes) have this section? How popular are they?

I think each of the residential colleges has a substance free section - and Rocky was the first res to initiate the program. Smoking has recently been banned in all the dorms, so virtually every dorm is smoke-free.

Is it true that substance free rooms are larger and nicer than the other dorms?

also, what percentage of freshman choose substance dorms as opposed to substance free dorms? if they let freshman have "substance" dorms, are they basically saying "go ahead and drink. we don't care."?

are the substance free dorms like living ina freshman dorm but without alchohol or is it different than the freshman dorm experience?

It's just like normal except certain floors/entryways in the rescols are designated as "substance-free" (i.e. the people there all said they wanted to live in an environment where alcohol and drugs won't be around).

They say that in some dorms you have a better likely hood of getting a "better" room in the the substance free rooms, but I don't remember which ones those are. But I'm thinking that basically all the rooms there must be awesome, so unless you're really hard-core substance free, why limit any options you might use just to get a slightly better room?

Sub free dorms tend to be better. It usually means the dorms are slightly quieter, as the big suites don't become massive alcohol parties.

mzhang, if you're in "substance" dorm (normal dorm??), are they just as quiet/peaceful as sub free dorms on weeknights and they only get wild on weekends? I don't have a problem with that, in fact, i would like to go to some parties, but i would assume tuesday night everyone is studying

yeah, i was wondering about sub-free dorms too... i'm definitely considering that, but my only qualm is that the ppl might all be dorks (well, i guess all pton kids are dorks in some way, lol)... but do the sub-free ppl carry an anti-social stigma or anything like that?

id rather live in a sub-free dorm where i can sleep and have private time and then go party at some other dorm. its always better to go to a party rather than host it =D

but can anyone from any dorm just walk into any party? i would assume that you would have to know the people hosting it and the best way to get to know them is to live in the same dorm facility. or are there more open parties that anyone can go to?

Whether your dorm is quiet or not totally depends on your roommates. Some may watch TV or play music late at night.

yes, but what is the quality of a sub-free?

"but can anyone from any dorm just walk into any party?"
Simple answer, yes.

I'm in subfree and I love my living arrangements. The quality of dorms varies across campus but on the whole, they tend to make the above average dorms subfree.

pimpdaddy do u live w/ other freshman or is it a miz of freshman and sophmores?

are teh freshman hallways all freshman or are freshman and sopmores intermingled, i was just wondering cuz i ahve a feeling the freshman will be desperate to meet people(i kno i iwill be and i dont want to be surrounded by sophmores who dont care if I choose to live in sub free (which im leaning towards..)

I'm not sure what kind of housing i'd rather, but i'm leaning to the regular housing because I would get to know more of the people throwing parties. I definitely want to go to parties. I don't really have a concern (please correct me if i'm wrong) that when i'm trying to study on a mon/tues/wed night I will be interrupted by loud parties in the next room. I would assume most party nights would be on thurs-sat when most people don't want to study all the time anyway.

I'm not sure you actually want to get to know the people who through the parties seeing as they most likely won't really care about school or anything. Also you seem to have the conception that parties are exclusive and you need to be on some kind of list or something. I'm sure you will find it's like if you walk into the room you are in the party...

I have to disagree with your statement about whoever throws the parties doesn't really care about school. I know lots of people who care a lot about school during the week but still have parties on the weekends. It's just a part of college. Sure, if someone's throwing parties on Tuesday at 3 in the afternoon, they prolly don't care, but a little bit of "fun" on the weekends isn't at all indicative of their seriousness about their schooling.

That's what I'd expect too. I wouldn't choose to live in a substance-allowable dorm just to 'be where the party's at'.
