Sucks to be middle class...

The big problem is that a lot of kids come out of the schools unprepared for college. We forget, among the stories here of students with 80 bazillion AP classes, that tons of students never take one AP class their entire high school careers. That’s not the CC’s fault. Some of those students are truly just not “college material” - but I would argue that most of them simply did not have the support structure, peer influences and parental guidance that we have the benefit of.

Polar I think you misread me. It was not my intent to knock the CC sytem. I agree it is wonderful. I am a product of it. As I transfered from a CC to UCSD.
I used the word many not majority. One partial solution would be to limit aid to tution and books for some. There are satifactory progress reqt’s in place, I feel they are not strigent enough.
My facts come from an article in the Imperial Valley Press. Yesterday’s paper. I was shocked. The jist of the article was how the high schools were doing a wonderful job because 76% of the students went on to college. Then they posted those scores on the placement exam. It did not sound so good to me then.
I am an old time liberal. Helped in Nicaruagua during the Sandanista revolution. But I feel before we increase pell and cal grants to CC we need to take a close look as to where and to whom the money is going to. My hope is that it as you have stated. However here in Imperial county I feel there is much abuse.
