Can anyone give me a list of good but off the radar schools in the NY/NJ/PA/MD area that give substantial merit aid to stellar students? It also needs to have a good science department.

I think it's about time to have a heart-to-heart with my child who desires only the elite liberal arts colleges which will probably not give much in terms of financial aid.

As far as I know, financial aid is better at bigger institutions because they generally have the revenue to cover it. But scholarships are easier at the “off the radar” schools.

Everyone dfines “substantial” differently – you may want to re-phrase as a % of COA.
Here are some; most are in PA. I assumed general science (not specific engineering). The list below are schools that I have tracked the amount of merit given to those graduating from our local schools for HS class 2007-2009 with the average merit at each school being 18-20K/per year renewable.

Ursinus

LaSalle

Arcadia

Albright

Kings

SUNY-Stony Brook (not sure of the other SUNYs – avg merit here has been $12k for OOS)

Juniatta – I’ve heard differing accounts, but worth looking into

Drexel

If you are willing to look beyond the region, consider Rhodes in Memphis

Thanks so much, longhaul.
My son has been getting brochures in the mail from Ursinus, Arcadia, Albright and Juniata but routinely throws them in the garbage. I will go check out their website.

Yes, I meant general science. His intended major is biochem.

Check out Ursinus!!! It’s actually a very nice school with good science programs. It’s in the Princeton Review if you want to read more about it
