from what i've heard, haas has gotten rid of the AP credit thing so you have to take the 7 breadth courses. this really limits your ability to do MCB/haas but does not prevent you from doing premed/haas (if you take only the core courses required by premed which is 1 yr math, gen chem, ochem, physics, bio). therefore you have a lot of requirements so i recommend that your 7 breadth courses are 3-4 units. having a 5 unit chinese with chem & math brings your total up to 13 units first semester. that leaves room for a seminar, decal, or a 3 unit course at most. and i dont recommend taking all those for letter grade if they're difficult.

i suggest that you take some courses for both haas/MCB and figure out what you want to do by your second year b/c it's hard fitting both into your schedule for the next four years - premed itself makes for a tough time in college, doing both cuts down on your time for social/extracurriculars/etc.

so if you're doing prehaas/premed for now, definitely do your R&C requirement, if you know you won't get a 5 on ap eng lit, sign up for a R&CB course if any are open.. easy ones are the R5B or R2B courses (asian american, slavic, scandinavian, german, etc.). premed also requires a year of english so it doesnt hurt to take one anyway.

so therefore for your first semester, i recommend
1) chem1a - one professor only. sign up for a lecture time, they don't care which lecture you go to.
2) math1a - you choose the prof. i hear hald is good prof but hard tests. don't know about the others.
3) R&C maybe or econ1
4) take a course to bring your total up to 15ish ideally
