Suggestions for Safeties, Matches and Reaches for D

I realize this is yet another school in the Midwest but it seems like a good fit:

University of Minnesota- Crookston

It has an equine studies major and her numbers should garner her admissions. They are a smaller university (over 2,000 students), give merit scholarships and have a reasonable out-of-state tuition.

Does she have a career plan and does that plan actually necessitate a degree in equine studies? I am asking because I think she is competitive for Florida State and it is a better school than many that are being suggested her.

I’m impressed by your upbeat attitude. Your D is lucky to have your help and support.

If you are low income, please take advantage of the opportunities for need-based from the colleges themselves. Even if your daughter could increase her ACT scores significantly, each scholarship will be a long-shot. She probably has many other fine accomplishments, but so do the other applicants.

You’ve done good research, so sort the leads by application due date. Often they are later than college application due dates. Now is a good time to find a list of schools (sounds like you’ve made good progress on this thread already!) and encourage your D to start drafting her essays. At some colleges, the essay is a big factor for admissions.

Watch those deadlines carefully. Many colleges have an early priority application deadline for those hoping to get scholarships. Make sure your daughter meets those deadlines.

Thanks- I created a spreadsheet with all the dates, scholarships, costs etc and got a big calendar to put up with the important dates as well.

Also she has started on her essays and she has asked to teachers for recommendations already to be ready by September 10th.

A good website for help with essay writing is [Essay Hell | Where Stressed Out Students Find Expert Help on Writing College Application Essays](http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■) and the book “escape from essay hell” . The author has a good section on the new common application. Sorry for the thread detour but I wanted to share this low cost assistance with you.

The spreadsheet and calendar is a good thing.

Itsv- thanks, we will check it out tonight.

If your D is really interested in California, she may want to consider a CSU. They are generally very hands on schools but not as prestigious (or as expensive) as the UC’s. CSU Chico, Cal Poly Pomona, and Fresno state all have well respected animal science programs that a kid with your D’s stats could get into.

Your daughter might just love Chico that lab315 Mentioned. It is in northern California and by California standards, not that far from Sacramento or Davis. It is a lovely campus, and it has a smaller more welcoming feel than Davis. I am in California as well and Cal Poly Pomona and Fresno are also good schools. Pomona has an Equine program if she is interested in that and it is home to the Kellogg Arabians. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is an excellent school but might be quite a bit out of reach like Davis. Many kids get into Davis that do not get into Cal Poly SLO. The Cal states use a straight formula for admission except for Cal Poly SLO, GPAx800+ SAT critical reading and math score, or the ACT (GPAx200)+(ACTx10). Minimum eligibility for oos is 3502 for SAT and 842 for ACT. That is the bare minimum to get in the actual is usually quite a bit higher.

If she might be interested in Marine biology we have huge number of great state schools for that. Humboldt would be something she could put on her list.

CSUs are cheaper at list price than UCs, but don’t expect much, if any, financial aid as an out-of-state student.

NC State University

[NCSU Animal Science Department - Teaching](http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/home/teaching.htm)

Take a look at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY. They have a wonderful animal science program as well as a Vet Tech program. It has a wonderful University Farm where some students chose to live and work while going to school. Also they have a competitive equine team. A greater percentage of students that graduate from Morehead are admitted to professional schools at a rate higher than the state and national average.

Just updating everyone. We have been working hard the past few months and I am very proud of how my daughter is keeping up with school, work, volunteering and her college apps/scholarships. So far she has been accepted to North Carolina A&T and Auburn. I am a very happy mom.

Congratulations on her acceptances.

Awesome news; congrats to her!

Thank you !

That’s terrific!

Congrats on her acceptances.

If she is still looking for schools to apply to she could consider SIU- Carbondale. It is in the midwest, but in reality it is barely north of Kentucky so it’s not too far north

[Equine Science | Bachelor’s Degree Programs and Specializations | College of Agricultural Sciences | SIU](http://coas.siu.edu/academics/bachelors/animal-science/equine-science/index.html)

SIU has an equine program and if she improved her ACT to a 26 or higher she would qualify for instate tuition.

I know nothing about this school, except D1 (an equine major), noted it’s a top school for equine management.

Thanks Colorado_mom and Frolic! She is done with her list. She has completed all her applications for Eckerd, UF, Cal Poly Pomona, and UC Davis. Auburn is her first choice so she is ecstatic. She is focusing now mostly on scholarships.

As an Auburn grad, so glad to hear she was accepted! I hope you are able to work it out financially so she can attend her dream school. War Eagle!
