Suggestions for undergraduate Mech E programs

@UCBChemGrad: so you personally enjoyed the town around berkeley a lot? i think that would play a huge part in my years if i go there! but yet @saintfan, i have also heard of the comparatively strenuous workload that cal students seem to undergo. im still currently waiting on most of my schools, only having uiuc accepting me so far.

@saintfan: so there are instances that colleges only admit you to general engineering then require you to score a certain grade before they admit you into ME in the sophomore year? i always assumed that undergrads in non-LACs embark straight within a particular major?

@alexandre: okay thanks! will definitely look more into the costs of the different schools, though i think i would probably be willing to pay for an education at any of these top-tier colleges. @ucb and alexandre, dont worry about it! i’ve heard differing views about some other schools too. i think its really up to the individual and his/her experiences which will decide whether the town is to his/her liking!

@jshain: ahh right okay… in-state and out-state costs can be quite different for locals right? i doubt it would be for me as alexandre has pointed out haha. thanks anw!

nickoo, I sure did. Berkeley may be gritty and urban, but it is pedestrian friendly with easy access to fantastic public transportation (both Oakland and SFO airports, downtown San Francisco, etc. are accessible via BART train - 1 block west of the campus). Lots of cheap, good places to eat (Gourmet Ghetto) and football is played on-campus in a newly renovated Cal Memorial Stadium this year. All of this makes sense for a student on a budget without access to a car. Berkeley engineering degree also carries more cachet.

sounds awesome! food is definitely important to me  haha. is the cal memorial stadium used for most of the cal’s sporting teams? i would be interested in trying out for the ultimate frisbee team if i made it in… anyway berkeley’s degrees (especially engineering) are extremely reputable and probably one of the reasons why i rank cal so highly. in singapore, not many us colleges are that recognised, some including the usual harvard, stanford, mit etc. Hence, getting a degree from a fairly well-known college, such as cal, would definitely be great!
