I live just a few minutes from Towson and I don’t see it as a commuter school. There are plenty of local kids but plenty stay on campus too. The town is full of kids on the weekends. I agree that the music kids at any school tend to stick around more than most other majors.

I don’t really want to go to a conservatory type music school. I’ve been looking into University of Maryland College Park a lot. I was wondering if that’s considered a good school for music. Any additional information would be great too.

Lawrence University (Appleton, WI)
Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH)
Northwestern University (Evanston, IL)
Saint Olaf College (Northfield, MN)
Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, IL)

Heidelberg College in northwest OH (Tiffin) has an excellent music dept and it is overall a good LAC. My D will be a soph there and is a vocal performance and music ed double major. She wanted a school that had a very good program, but not a conservatory so she could take liberal arts classes. A close friend who graduated this year has been admitted for voice to the New England Conservatory of Music for graduate degree. It is strong vocal, choral, instrumental and piano.

We live about 30 minutes from Towson, and many students from our high school live on campus and love it there. It has a nice main street, with shopping and movie theaters to walk to. I hear a lot of good things about their music program.

Hi all, I’m brand new here. My son is a very talented percussionist and a senior in HS. He is looking for a college that has a great program in music performance. He just visited Columbia at Chicago and was very impressed. I am not so much…

He can play anything, but is looking for a school of music that emphasizes percussion performances OUTSIDE of jazz. His academics are strong. Please advise!!!

Thank you!

The drummer’s mom (Jo)

imaginepeacelove, welcome.

By “outside of jazz” are you thinking classical, contemporary/popular, or a program that embraces all genres? Also, a bit of detail on your son’s training and experience (and potential goals) is useful in helping others suggest potential programs.

Hey, I’m looking for a school with a good music program, but more specifically a good music production program. I know Berklee in Boston has one. Any others?

infinityonhigh, do you mean a music production and technology program? Perhaps the AES link in the thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/756631-music-technology-graduate-programs.html may get you started.
Can’t find much on CC regarding The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

We’ve got plans to be in Philly 9/25-27 to see Sonny Rollins, and just make a Philly weekend out of it. And then I discovered this school. It’s just a few blocks from where we’re staying.

They do tours Mon-Fri only, but we can’t get there in time for the Fri tour. I emailed what would be our admissions rep and requested a Saturday tour [rather brazen], and he’s agreed to meet us himself!

We’re visiting Gettysburg Friday morning, so I’ll be filling out a couple of visit reports.

Is Uarts right there with Curtis and Temple in Philadelphia?

Can’t wait for your report.

Any opinions on the music programs in Cleveland including Cleveland State, U of Akron and Baldwin Wallace? Sax player wants to be near friend at CWRU.

Yes I know of CIM and Oberlin but he is not that level of player.

Any advice I can pass along?

My daughter is looking for a school with a good vocal performance program and a competitive track and field program. Any suggestions?

onyourmark, how academically competitive? Rice has both, but is also a harder academic admit.

“good vocal performance program and a competitive track and field program.”

UCLA, USC, Indiana, LSU,UT to name a few. Be aware of scheduling conflicts. I have a niece in a top track and field program(Pac 10)and though it gave her a full scholarship, she had a tough time choosing majors due to the restrictions imposed by her practice and track meet schedules.

She’s a senior in an academically challenging prep school and gets A’s and B’s. She’s getting letters from schools interested in recruiting her for track. She is likely to get strong backing from a college track coach if that’s any help in admissions.

musicamusica is right. Check about conflicts in practice and rehearsal times. . Most music ensembles, opera workshops, lessons, and studio time seems to be late in the afternoon which is the same time as many practices. You do not see too many doing music performance and a scholarship athletics or a heavy lab science for that matter because of the conflicts.

Yes. That’s the crux of the problem. I had a long conversation with a head coach of a top Div. I track program who told me that at most big Div. I schools the coaches will feel that the team “owns” the athletes and that team commitments come first. That will be a problem for a music performance major.

You may want to look into the regulations for maximum number of hours the school can have them training in a week. For some sports it is 20 hours a week. Then you have to decide if she can spare 20 hours a week training and the trips to meets and how they may conflict with performances. Sounds like very tough but not impossible scheduling.

Music professors and atheletic coaches can indeed influence admissions for a borderline academic student they want for their program. Yes indeed any department that gives scholarship money will expect the student to make decisions in their favor.
