Suggestions of Colleges with Music Majors

I’d look into Div III schools instead of Div. I. No money, but maybe an edge for admission. And they don’t ‘own’ you.
On the Oberlin prospective athlete form online they actually ask if you’re going to be applying to the Conservatory. And they had a pianist on the football team. I started a thread on this last year which you should be able to find if you search. “Music and athletics” or something like that. My son is at Bard Conservatory and pitching on their club baseball team. So far so good in terms of practices - they only need to show for two out of three per week. They are all late afternoon. But my other son, who played Div III golf on an NCAA team had to arrange his class schedule each spring around the practices and missed many entire days for tournaments. Fall was easier as Div III golf is only a one season sport - unlike track and field & cross country. It could be that running will be mostly early in the morning - but she will be certain to be away almost every weekend at meets - when there may very well be concerts and rehearsals.

Does anyone know anything about Binghamton (State University of New York)? They have a B.M. degree in vocal performance and Div. I track. I haven’t heard anything about their music program, though.

onyourmark, I don’t recall Binghamton as typically being mentioned as a music program. A search of this forum for Binghamton reveals a few posts, some from '05 & '06. Not a lot of info there.

A couple of SUNY/voice threads

And a general voice thread

As an aside, the pinned stickies are great informational and background threads, but you may get more attention and replies to specific questions by either starting a new thread, or tacking on to a specific related thread rather than the stickies.

onyourmark, I saw this article about a star football player who’s a music major at William and Mary. [Marc Narducci: Grimes making most of lone college offer | Philadelphia Inquirer | 09/11/2009](http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/high_school/58889217.html)

I suspect the Music dept accommodates the needs of the football team in this case. Perhaps, the smaller the school, the easier it may be to pursue both athletics and music.

Honestly, the idea of a piano major playing football is downright ludicrous. There is no hand or wrist protection, and the chance of hand injury (not to mention head injury) is simply too great.

Because the hands and brains of musicians are their most precious possessions, I have always had a hard time understanding how serious musicians can also be serious athletes. Everyone I know who was really serious about both ended up having to choose (recreational sports and music for enjoyment do not count).

Is Uarts right there with Curtis and Temple in Philadelphia?

[/quote]

Geographically, it’s downtown, along Avenue of the Arts.

So TrumpetDad how was Uarts?

Curtis and Temple should be within blocks of Uarts all downtown.

CURTIS INSTITUTE OF MUSIC
Located at 1726 Locust Street, adjacent to the beautiful Rittenhouse Square in the heart of Philadelphia.

Uarts has to be within walking distance from Curtis, as is Temple. I thought you might stop at both or all three while there.

Don’t know that Temple is walking distance from UArts but it is only a few stops on the subway. Curtis is a ten min walk from UArts. Temple has a good music program and a lot of good faculty members, though it is not located in the nicest area of Philadelphia (unlike UArts and Curtis). We visited Curtis to visit someone who studies there but we never visited UArts as my son did not want the pure conservatory. Curtis does not have Jazz though just a classical orchestra, that sounded great when we saw them at Carniege Hall in May.

Thinking back we past Temple on the way to downtown where Curtis and Uarts are and it was a couple miles or more. U of Penn is not that far either but you are correct beyond walking distance.

Temple was in a run down area.

I think TrumpetDad said they were unsure if it would be jazz or not. So Curtis might have been of value to his child. My son would not have an interest.

Strangely enough I just read a book on Arts colleges that said no Jazz at Julliard. So I always wonder about schools until someone that actually knows says it.

UArts visit will be 9/26, Gettysburg on 9/25.

I would say Mansifield university in PA depending on what type of job u want once you get out of college…but if u want something like band teacher, music teacher etc. Mansifield is a good one 2 check

I couldnt tell u a single thing about the music program at Bingahmton

In response to #485… It may be easier to combine the Div 1-AA athletics with the BA Music Major at a school like William & Mary (where it appears a student only is required to take 6 semesters of applied lessons, and 2 semesters of ensemble), no audition is required, and students do not declare a major until 1/2-way through their sophomore year. [William & Mary - Submitting Recordings with Your Application to W&M](http://www.wm.edu/as/music/students/admissionsrecordings/index.php)

As SpiritManager suggests she may find more flexibility in strong liberal arts music programs with Div-1AA, Div-II, Div-III athletics.

Depending on where her stronger passion lies she could also look at the SOM programs and requirements at the Div-1 schools that more pique her interest. It seems as if often in college kids have to choose which will be their primary interest… but post #485 illustrates that maybe not always if you find the right match.

If anyone knows anything about Towson University’s percussion dept., please fill me in. So far we have been looking at Indiana U, Northern Illinois, and University of Kentucky. Northwestern has a great program but it’s too hard to get into academically. My son is interested in classical percussion, world percussion and drumline, which cuts out all the conservatories. If anyone has any insights, it would be appreciated. We don’t want to put all our eggs in the IU basket.

percussionist - have you looked at James Madison University in Virginia? It is a much tougher admit than Towson but the7 have drumline and I have been very impressed with what I’ve seen from the percussion department. One of the first music majors I met there was getting his MM in percussion. He had great things to say. My D is a vocal performance there. Kids are very happy there and the campus is beautiful. I live near Towson and it also has a nice music department. The school is growing and I like the area. I don’t know anything about percussion there.

Thanks for the report. Frankly I never knew there was a Gettysburg college. Conservatory? What got that place on your radar to start with?

When is your Uarts tour?

Son’s first private instructor is a Gettysburg alum.

UArts visit was Saturday; Visit Report is forthcoming.
