Suggestions of Colleges with Music Majors

well when i visited oberlin thats what they personally said to ask so it wouldn’t hurt

violadad:
Thanks for the advice. Will probably make a thread later if more questions come up.

I also emailed the trumpet professor a few hours ago - hoping to get an answer to see how likely it is for me to get in.

18karat, my intent was not to question the veracity of your suggestion, but to clarify it further.

Depends on who “they” were. If that was the position presented within the confines of an Oberlin info session, made by a member of faculty or administration, in writing or on a webpage I will concede that. If what you state was said by a current student, or even a student clerk acting in an official capacity, I would still take it with a large dose of salt.

The subtraction methodology simply may not work at every institution.

For your own “safety” and peace of mind during this process, do try and refer to an official source whenever possible. If you need program specific info that is unavailable or unclear from the school’s website or other documentation, your best strategy is to call and ask. On occasion you might even encounter conflicting dates or or other confusing info. And contingent on the information you seek, you may well have to go up the pecking order to get it truly clarified. In many cases a work study student answering the phone or answering an email simply will not know the answer.

Just my $ .02, coupled with a bit of knowledge and experience. Nothing posted here is gospel.

I’m looking for good inexpensive music conservatories or universities with good music departments.
Some schools I’ve found are SUNY Purchase, Indiana, Rutgers and TCNJ…

Can anyone name a few more?
Thanks a lot!

You might want to post this as a thread in the forum below.
Where are you located? (For in state tuition)
Also…UNT (North Texas) has affordable out of state tuition for the right students.

I live in New Jersey, so schools on the east coast would be ideal…

Anyone…?

Montclair State U.

my d is a hs sophomore and just starting to think about college search. She is very strong academically (esp. math) and will most likely be in the top 10% of her graduating class. She is also a great clarinet (and O.K. piano player) and wants to continue playing in college. She is not interested in performing as a career but has not ruled out being a music teacher. She is also possibly more interested in pursuing music business and/or arts administration (sometimes called Music Industry, Arts Administration…NOT interested in Audio Tech or Engineering); combining business and music/art.
It is a bit overwhelming as I try to research possible schools (either LAC or Universities; not CONS) because I don’t think she would want to be locked into something; though in the next few years she may know more…but if you want to go for music it seems you need to be on track early(trial lessons, auditions, etc.)! She might want to just study math/music and then in grad school pursue arts administration. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. So far, I have looked online at Williams, Lawrence, IU, Northwestern,UMich,James Madison, BU,BC, SUNY Fredonia, Oneonta (we are NYS residents).

clarinet13mom, welcome. A couple of quick thoughts: in the event she wants a music ed path or even some of the music business/admin programs, you might wish to read this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/258796-so-you-want-music-major-one-familys-experience.html</a>.</p>

Understand that music ed programs are geared to providing students with the skills and background to teach music within a k-12 public school setting. One should want to teach, and not have it as a fallback position. The majority of these programs are audition centric for admittance. Plenty here on music ed, music education.
There’s a good deal written about a number of schools you name, less on others. Try searching “double”, “dual” as well.

Too late to edit into the above post, but for some general background info and links as a non-major, the most recent thread is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/979845-another-send-music-supplement-question.html</a></p>

I have been reading/lurking for a little while now and I have seen your name often so I appreciate your prompt reply. You are famous in my mind. You seem to be a great wealth of info!
Many of those links I have read but I will go back over them.
I also appreciate what you are saying about music ed and do agree that it is something one should have a passion for and not a “fall back” career. She is very patient with children and has had experience working with children so I think she would be quite suited to that field. She has it in her mind but it is not something she is sure about at this stage of the game. That is what I find difficult as it seems that one would need to be certain of that when applying to schools and then you are tied into it.
Re. music business. She is quite capable of auditioning and I am actually turned off when I see that many of these music business programs do not require auditions. She is more interested in being a manager or director of a symphony, working in administrative capacity for a music/arts organization than doing recording/audio/sound eng. or technical things (though she is strong in math; just not her interest). It seems many of the schools that offer music business are more technical. Then I wonder if one should just double major in business and music?
Glad you were enthused about the combo of music/math. Would that be a better way to go for undergraduate if one was not certain? Then, if you want to teach, go back and get your masters/certification?
The only thing she is certain of is that she is not going to try to be a clarinetist to make a living. She would like to play in college, continue to perform, keep her hand in it, play on the side no matter what she does in life.
It’s hard when she doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up and we as parents are trying to guide them and not pressure them. College used to be a time to figure it out and now it seems you have to know so early! To start on that path with trial lessons, auditions, etc. is something we could do but then it feels there is no turning back/but you don’t want to miss the opportunity either!
Excuse the confused rambling!

Perhaps it is mentioned in other threads, but if not, an excellent school to consider for the math/music combination is St. Olaf just south of Minneapolis. Their undergraduate math program is stellar: they have a higher proportion of students doing math than almost any other liberal arts college, they have some fabulous math profs (my favourite Calculus text is coauthored by two St. Olaf profs), and they have a very high rate of students going on to graduate work in math (some years highest in the nation, I believe). Their music program is also very good for a LAC. The rate of student participation in music is again among the nation’s highest. Academics are strong and most students seem very happy there.

D was torn between performance (musical theatre) and music business, plus she wanted the option to someday teach music down the road.

D decided to pursue a music (BM) degree in Vocal Performance at NYU with a specialization in Musical Theatre instead of a BFA in theatre, so she would have the option to teach by getting a master’s in music education at a later date.

She decided to stick with performance instead of pursuing music business because she saw that she was able to take many of the same classes as music business majors (and actually broaden it into film/ tv and theatre) by minoring in the “Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology” at her school. It is an interdisciplinary minor through Stern, Steinhardt and Tisch. It is also an MBA program at NYU.

To add…

D is quite happy with her decision in terms of school/major/ minor. Obviously, I have no idea where she will end up career-wise, but I know she is happy she chose to stick with performance and add the minor I described. For starters, when else will she get the chance to pursue musical theatre? Plus, who knows where it can lead? The connections she has made will provide an incredible network regardless of what side of the business she pursues. She has had internship opportunities working in the music industry, in PR, for the mayor’s office (writing entertainment-related news releases) and interning for a film/ B’dway producer.

Thanks to you both, violadad and uskoolfish!
I took some time today to read the links suggested…some I had seen before and some not…clarified a lot of things in my overwhelmed mind!
As we begin to make lists over the next two years this will all be valuable info. I have taken copious notes!
My d has made the most kind, smart and funny friends through music. The music parents on this board are cut from the same cloth. Thanks.
