Hello! What are some schools that are strong in the sciences and also music. I'm not looking to major in music, but would like an opportunity to perform in groups without majoring. Let's see, I don't want an urban school.. basically the upper limit on on the town should be about an Ithaca size, and anything more rural is good too. One more thing, I don't want to go any farther south than I am now (Indiana). The farther north the better. A few stats: GPA W: 4.2ish, UW: I dunno, SAT: CR- 800, M- 770, W- 720. I will have taken 8 APs total, I dunno about scores though. So YEAH, thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

Dartmouth? Rural, UG focused -- seems like a fit?

Carleton. 10chars

Bowdoin. Brunswick is a great town, too.

Oberlin? The conservatory is great, and the sciences - especially the engineering, I think - are excellent too. Rural, but if you don't mind, it's a great quaint little town. It's not OH-MY-GOSH-I-NEED-TO-KILL-MYSELF-OVER-THIS-APPLICATION competetive, but it's a good school. Definitley consider as a match or even a high "semi-safety"

jrobbfed: If you're looking to peform but not major in music, you should look for schools that don't have great music programs, unless you're really good at what you do. Otherwise you will be competing with the top music majors for performance positions. Just about all colleges have a variety of performing groups, so you shouldn't have that much trouble joining one, though you normally would have to audition (unless you start a new group).

But if you want the top challenge, at a school with excellent science and music programs, University of Rochester fits that bill.

Oberlin and Wesleyan come to mind.

Agree with Dadofsam. The Oberlin convervatory is a separate admission - while the wonderful facilites are available to all, the priorty is for conservatory students and a good portion of the performance options are for conservatory students as well. Likewise, the greatest performance opportunities at U of R are for those admitted to the Eastman school of music.

I second Wesleyan...we have great sciences and good music, but we don't have a conservatory, and almost if not all performance oppertunities are open to non-majors as much as majors.

Also check out Vassar.
