I'm gonna be a freshman at JMU and I don't know what I prefer. I heard suite style is more secluded and in hall style you meet more people but I've also heard that that's not true and you meet just as many people in suite style. Would the suites be coed? Or is that just halls? Or can they all be coed? Some people say the bathrooms in halls are gross. But I feel like as a freshman I'd meet more people in a hall and have more fun because everyone would be on one floor rather than a suite where you're just in a small group.

Suites typically mean having more privacy. It makes it easier to hide in your room and not talk to anyone, if you want to do that… same goes for you neighbors. That’s what causes the anti-social reputation for suites. That’s not to say they can’t be a fun, social environment, just that it’s easier to avoid people. If you keep your door open, or go knocking on doors introducing yourself, visiting your neighbors, etc. you can make just as many friends in suites as in the more typical hall setup.

The other option, with a hall bathroom, forces people to get out of their room, and it’s more likely they’ll go hang out in a floor lounge. So it kinda forces people to bump into each other. And that makes them more social because you’re constantly around other people and can’t really get away.

Personally I prefer suite/apartment style rooms, but yes, those floors can definitely be more anti-social.

Co-ed will depend on the school… I’m not sure for JMU. At my school, your roommates (and suite-mates, for small suites) are all the same gender, but floors themselves are co-ed. But that depends entirely on the school.
