<p>You'd be surprised how many schools should, but don't have a/c in the dorms. Duke, Cal Tech and Harvey Mudd don't have air conditioned dorms. Go figure.</p>

<p>To answer the original question, the residential college system is designed to foster diversity and inclusiveness. Rice has students across the political and religious spectrums and is among the most open to all points of view of the major research universities. As for the students themselves, they are diverse, relatively laid back, very tolerant, generally modest, friendly, and spooky smart.</p>
<p>And yes, with an endowment of about 700k per student, Rice can afford AC.</p>
<p>Houston is crazy-hot during the summer. People who were here for owl weekend saw some of Houston's best weather; it was freakishly cool that week. However, most things in Houston are fairly new (built in 70s or 80s or newer), and as a result EVERYTHING is over-airconditioned. Bring lots of light jackets/sweaters to wear inside.</p>
