Could someone give me a summary of applying to colleges? Like what you need to do and whatnot. I will be applying to college next year and I am quite unfamiliar with the process. For instance, when you ask your counselor to fill out the secondary school report, do you attach his/her recommendation with it? Do the teacher recommendations go with the evaluations? Are these things usually mailed out or electronically done? If you mailed your papers out, did you have a school mailbox?

Thank you for answering these serious questions, I appreciate it.

Let me try to recall my application process.

During the first few months of your senor year, be prepared to ask one or two of your favorite teachers that remember you for recommendations.

Create an account on the common app (if you’re applying to privates; note: some privates are not on this website) and the UC app (if you’re applying to schools in the University of California system). There are other websites like QuestBridge that you can apply through as well.

Most schools do their files such as recommendations and secondary school reports electronically. I’ve only used the common app/uc app so I’ll only be able to provide information about either of those. The common app requires that you put the information of your school counselor so that he/she can write a recommendation and send a secondary school report (via online) once the midyear grades are out. If your counselor chooses to do the process via mail, there are printouts available on the website.

Colleges that require separate applications will most likely have the same process.

One recommendation with your apps: start early or you will feel very overwhelmed with trying to get recommendations in, etc. Good luck but don’t fret too much!
